INSTRUCTIONS

Stripe Sequence

Work 2 rows stocking st each of M, C1, M, C2, M, C3, M, C4, M, C5, M, C6, M, and C7 throughout ... 24 rows stripes in all.

HEAD

Using 4mm needles and M, cast on 13 sts.

1st row (WS) - Purl.

2nd row - K1, M1, rep from to last st, K1 ... 25 sts.

3rd and every foll alt rows - Purl.

Change to C2 and work in stripe sequence, beg with C2.

4th row - K2, M1, rep from to last st, K1 ... 37 sts.

6th row - K3, M1, rep from to last st, K1 ... 49 sts.

Work 9 rows in stripes, beg with a purl row.

Beg face - Note - When changing colours in centre of row, twist the colour to be used underneath and to the right of the colour just used, making sure yarns are worked firmly at joins. Use a separate ball of yarn for each section of colour. Wind balls into smaller balls or use yarn bobs.

10th row - K19 C5, K11 M, K19 C5.

11th row - P19 C5, P11 M, P19 C5.

Using M, 12th row - Knit.

Using M, 13th row - Purl.

14th row - K19 C6, K11 M, K19 C6.

15th row - P19 C6, K11 M, P19 C6.

Using M, 16th row - Knit.

Using M, 17th row - Purl.

18th row - K20 C7, K4 M, K1 C7, K4 M, K20 C7.

19th row - P21 C7, P2 M, P3 C7, P2 M, P21 C7.

Work 4 rows in stripes, beg with a knit row.

Shape Top of Head - Keeping stripes correct, Next row - K10, sl 1, K1, psso, K2, K2tog, K17, sl 1, K1, psso, K2, K2tog, K10 ... 45 sts.

Work 1 row.

Next row - K10, sl 1, K1, psso, K2tog, K17, sl 1, K1, psso, K2tog, K10 ... 41 sts.

Work 1 row.

Using M, Next row - Knit. Cast off purlways.

Place safety eyes in position or embroider eyes on M face section 7 rows from beg of where face was commenced and placing 5 sts apart.

Mark Position of Snout - Place a marker in centre of face 7 rows up from beg of face. Place the bottom marker in centre at the beg of C3 stripe. Place side markers 5 sts from beg and end of face.

SNOUT (worked sideways)

Using 4mm needles and using M only, cast on 5 sts.

1st row (WS) - Purl.

2nd row - K1, M1, rep from to last st, K1 ... 9 sts.

3rd row - Purl.

4th row - K1, M1, knit to last st, M1, K1 ... 11 sts.

Rep last 2 rows until there are 17 sts, ending with a purl row.

Work 16 rows stocking st.

Next row - K1, sl 1, K1, psso, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 ... 15 sts.

Next row - Purl.

Rep last 2 rows until 11 sts rem, ending with a purl row.

Next row - K1, sl 1, K1, psso, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 ... 9 sts.

Next row - P1, (P2tog) 4 times ... 5 sts.

Cast off. Place markers to centre of snout on top, bottom and each side.

EARS (make 4 pieces)

Using 4mm needles and using M only, cast on 9 sts.

1st and every foll alt row (WS) - Purl.

2nd row - K1, M1, K3, (M1, K1) twice, K2, M1, K1 ... 13 sts.

4th row - (K1, M1) twice, K3, (M1, K1) 4 times, K2, (M1, K1) twice ... 21 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

8th row - K1, sl 1, K1, psso, K5, K2tog, rep from once more, K1 ... 17 sts.

9th row - P1, P2tog, P3, P2tog tbl, rep from once more, P1 ... 13 sts.

10th row - K1, sl 1, K1, psso, K1, K2tog, rep from once more, K1 ... 9 sts.

Cast off purlways.

Join side edge of ear pieces tog. Using M, whip st around outside edge.

BODY

Using 4mm needles and M, cast on 12 sts.

1st and every foll alt row (WS) - Purl.

Change to C1 and work in stripe sequence throughout.

2nd row - K1, M1, rep from to last st, K1 ... 23 sts

4th row - K2, M1, rep from to last st, K1 ... 34 sts.

6th row - K3, M1, rep from to last st, K1 ... 45 sts.

8th row - K4, M1, rep from to last st, K1 ... 56 sts.

Work 19 rows in stripes, beg with a purl row.

Shape Top of Body - Next row - K20, K2tog, K3 rep from twice more, K2tog, K19 ... 52 sts.

Work 5 rows in stripes, beg with a purl row.

Next row - K2, K2tog, K8, rep from to end ... 47 sts.

Work 1 row.

Next row - K2, K2tog, K7, rep from to end ... 42 sts.

Cont dec in this manner, working 1 less st between each dec in every foll alt row until 17 sts rem.

Cast off purlways.

ARMS (make 2, beg at hand)

Using 4mm needles and M, cast on 10 sts.

1st row (WS) - Purl.

2nd row - K1, M1, K3, M1, K2, M1, K3, M1, K1 ... 14 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

Cast on 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows ... 22 sts.

Work 6 rows stocking st.

Next row - K1, sl 1, K1, psso, K6, K2tog, rep from once more, K1 ... 18 sts.

Next row - Purl.

Next row - K1, sl 1, K1, psso, K4, K2tog, rep from once more, K1 ... 14 sts.

Next row - Purl.

Change to C1 and work 56 rows stocking st in stripe sequence, beg with a knit row.

Cast off.

LEGS (make 2, beg at foot)

Using 4mm needles and M, cast on 14 sts.

1st row (WS) - Purl.

Change to C1 and work in stripe sequence.

2nd row - K1, M1, K5, M1, K2, M1, K5, M1, K1 ... 18 sts.

3rd and every foll alt row - Purl.

4th row - (K1, M1) twice, K5, (M1, K1) twice, (K1, M1) twice, K5, (M1, K1) twice ... 26 sts.

6th row - (K1, M1) 3 times, K7, (M1, K1) 3 times, (K1, M1) 3 times, K7, (M1, K1) 3 times ... 38 sts.

Work 5 rows in stripes, beg with a purl row.

12th row - K16, sl 1, K1, psso, K2, K2tog, K16 ... 36 sts.

13th and every foll alt row - Purl.

14th row - K15, sl 1, K1, psso, K2, K2tog, K15 ... 34 sts.

16th row - K8, cast off next 18 sts, K8 (incl st already on needle) ... 16 sts.

Keeping stripes correct, work 57 rows, beg with a purl row. Cast off.

TAIL (beg at tip)

Using 4mm needles and M, cast on 6 sts.

1st row (WS) - Purl.

Change to C1 and work in stripe sequence.

2nd row - Inc knitways once in each st to end ... 12 sts.

Keeping stripes correct, work 55 rows, beg with a purl row.

Cast off.

OPTIONAL CROCHET BELLY BUTTON

Using 4mm hook and C6, make a magic ring.

1st round - 1ch, work 6dc into ring, sl st in first dc ... 6dc.

Change to C7.

2nd round - 1ch, 2dc in each dc to end, sl st in first dc ... 12dc.

Fasten off.

OPTIONAL KNITTED BELLY BUTTON

Using 4mm needles and C7, cast on 16 sts.

1st row - Knit.

Change to C6 and knit 2 rows garter st.

Break off yarn and thread through sts, pull up and secure.

Join side edge.

FINISHING

Using mattress st, join back seam of head matching stripes. Fold head so that the seam is at centre back, then join top opening. Fill head through neck opening then close opening.

Pin snout to face, matching markers, sew in position leaving a small opening, fill snout and close opening. Pin ears in position to sides of head as pictured, then sew in position. Using black yarn embroider mouth using back stitch, nose and eyebrows using straight stitches. Join side edges of body tog matching stripes to from back seam, fill body. Join cast on sts of bottom of foot together. Join leg and foot seam matching stripes, filling lightly as you go. Fold leg so that the back seam is in the centre, sew top of leg together.

Join arm and hand seam, filling lightly as you go, sew top of arm together.

Join side edges of tail together matching stripes, do not fill.

Sew head in position onto top opening of body, sew arms to each side body just under neck seam with thumbs pointing towards front.

Sew legs and tail in position so that Monkey sits. Using C3, sew belly button in position to front of body as pictured.
