Sweet Perfume Quilt, Pillowcase & Cushion Project

What you'll need:

Fabrics are from 'Studio E Sweet Perfume' range

  • 1 x Butterfly Panel, dark navy
  • 2m Fabric A - Floral Bouquet, pink
  • 1.5m Fabric B - Floral Bouquet, dark navy (includes binding)
  • 1m Fabric C - Floral Butterflies, white
  • 1m Fabric D - Floral Medallion, turquoise
  • 1.1m Fabric E - Floral Vine, pink
  • 20cm Fabric F - Floral Vine, lime
  • 3m Sweet Perfume fabric of choice for backing
  • 1.6m Legacy cotton/bamboo batting
  • 2m x #7 natural piping cord
  • Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
  • Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
  • Quilting pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Hand needle
  • Sewing machine with 1/4" foot & walking foot, zipper foot for piping
  • Size 18 (46cm x 46cm) Cushion Insert

All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed.

1/4" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.

INSTRUCTIONS

Cutting

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

  • From Fabric A cut - 4 x 3" strips for Border 1, 1 x 4 1/2" strip, crosscut into 4 rectangles 6 1/2" x 4 1/2" for Border 3, 7 x 5 1/2" strips for Border 5, two 19 1/2" x 21 1/2" rectangles for pillowcase fronts.
  • From Fabric B cut - 4 x 3" strips for Border 2, 6 x 3 1/2" strips for Border 4, 7 x 2 1/2" strips for binding, 1 x 3" strip, crosscut into 2 x 19 1/2" lengths for pillowcases, 2 x 1 1/2" strips for cushion piping.
  • From Fabric C fussy cut - 1 x 13" square for cushion front, 20 x 4 1/2"squares for Border 3.
  • From Fabric D cut - 1 x 4?" strip, crosscut into 7 x 4?" squares, cut once on the diagonal to make 14 half-square triangles, 1 x 13 1/2" strip cut into two 19 1/2" x 13 1/2" rectangles for pillowcase cuffs, 2 x 3" strips for cushion front, 1 x 13" strip cut into two 18" x 13" rectangles for cushion back.
  • From Fabric E cut - 1 x 4?" strip, crosscut into 7 x 4?" squares, cut once on the diagonal to make 14 half-square triangles, 4 x 3" strips for border 1, 7 x 5 1/2" strips for border 5.
  • From Fabric F cut - 1 x 4?" strip, crosscut into 7 x 4?" squares, cut once on the diagonal to make 14 half-square triangles.

Quilt

1. Panel - Trim panel 22 1/2" x 42 1/2".

2. Border 1 - Sew one 3" Fabric A border strip to each side of the quilt. Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric. Sew remaining 2 x 3" Border 1 strips to the top and bottom of the quilt, press and trim off any excess fabric.
3. Border 2 - Take the 4 x 3" Fabric B Border 2 strips, trim off selvedges and sew together end to end into one long strip. Cut two 47 1/2" lengths and sew one to each side of the quilt top. Press seams towards border and trim off excess fabric. Cut remaining strip in half and sew one length top and one to bottom edge. Press seam towards border and trim off excess fabric.

4. Border 3 - Take the Fabric D, E and F half-square triangles (42 triangles in total) and sew together to form 21 half-square triangle units, 7 x D-E units, 7 x D-F, units and 7 E-F units.

5. For one side border sew together 7 half-square triangle units and 6 Fabric C 4 1/2" fussy cut squares, starting and ending with a half-square triangle unit (refer to photo if preferred). Press seams in one direction. Sew Border 3 to one side of quilt top, press seams towards Border 2. Repeat to make the other side border and sew to opposite side of quilt top.

6. For top and bottom borders sew together 4 Fabric C 4 1/2" fussy cut squares and 3 half-square triangle units and, starting and ending with a Fabric C 4 1/2" fussy cut squares (refer to photo if preferred). At each end of the top and bottom border strips sew a 6 1/2" x 4 1/2" Fabric A rectangle. Press seams in one direction. Centre one Border 3 strip along top and sew in place. Repeat for bottom edge of quilt top. Press seams towards Border 2 and trim off any excess fabric.


7. Border 4 - Take the 6 x 3 1/2" Fabric B Border 4 strips, trim off selvedges and sew together end to end into one long strip. Cut two 60 1/2" lengths and sew one to each side of the quilt top. Press seams towards border and trim off excess fabric. Cut remaining strip in half and sew one length top and one to bottom edge. Press seam towards border and trim off excess fabric.

8. Border 5 - Take the 7 x 5 1/2" Fabric A Border 5 strips, trim off selvedges and sew together end to end into one long strip. Cut two 66 1/2" lengths and sew one to each side of the quilt top. Press seams towards border and trim off excess fabric. Cut remaining strip in half and sew one length top and one to bottom edge. Press seam towards border and trim off excess fabric.

9. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

10. Join the 7 x 2 1/2" Fabric B binding strips on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.

PILLOWCASE

Per Pillowcase

Fabric A - Front 19 1/2" x 21 1/2" rectangle, Fabric B - Strip 3" x 19 1/2",

Fabric D - Cuff 19 1/2" x 13 1/2", Fabric E - Back 19 1/2" x 38"

11. Press both the Fabric B strip and the Fabric D cuff fabric in half with wrong sides together. Place the folded strip on top of the front with raw edges aligned along the 19 1/2" side and sew together ?" from edge. Place folded cuff on top with raw edges aligned and sew 1/4" from the edge. Zigzag or overlock edge to neaten.

12. Fold cuff open to expose the strip, pressing seam allowance towards the cuff. Topstitch close to inside edge of cuff. Optional - topstitch loose edge of strip to the pillowcase front if desired.

13. To sew a double hem along one short edge of the back, fold and press under 3/4" then another 3/4" and topstitch hem in place. Press well.

14. Place the back right side up with the hemmed edge on the right-hand end. Place the front with right sides together on top aligning left-hand end and top and bottom edges. Pin together at left-hand end and top and bottom edges. Note - back will be longer at right-hand end.

15. Fold the overhanging end of the back over onto the front with the fold hard up against the edge of the cuff. Pin in place. Sew together along the three raw edges of the pillowcase. Zigzag or overlock raw edges to neaten. Turn the pillowcase right side out and press. Make a second pillowcase

CUSHION

Fabric B - 2 x 1 1/2" strips for piping, Fabric C - fussy cut 13" square for front,

Fabric D - 2 x 3" strips for front, two 18" x 13" rectangles for back

16. Cut 1 x 3" Fabric D strip into 2 x 13" lengths and sew one strip to each side of the 13" Fabric C fussy cut square. Press seams towards border. Cut remaining 3" Fabric D strip in half and sew one strip to top and one to bottom edge. Press seams towards border and trim off excess fabric.

17. To make piping - Trim selvedges from 2 x 1 1/2" Fabric B strips and join together on the bias to make one long strip. Fold the fabric strip in half with wrong sides facing then open out and place one length of piping cord down the middle 1" in from end of the strip. Refold the fabric strip in half so the cording is sandwiched down the centre and pin to hold end in place.Work along the length pushing piping cord into the fold and pin in place.

18. Attach zipper foot to the machine and move the needle all the way to the left. With the cording to the left of the foot and raw edges of fabric aligned sew down the length to encase the piping cord.

19. To attach piping with cushion front right side facing, start 4" from bottom corner leaving 1" of piping hanging off the edge, match raw edges of piping to raw edges of cushion front and pin.Piping sits on the cushion front. Work around the edge matching raw edges, easing piping at the corners. Stop 2" from the start but do not cut the piping. Sew piping around the cushion front stitching over the stitching on the piping. When back at the start overlap the piping and let 1/2" of the end hang off the edge. This will not be seen as it will be inside the cushion. When stitched cut off excess piping.

20. For cushion backs sew a double hem along one 18" long side of each Fabric D rectangle, fold and press under 1/4" then another 1/4" and topstitch hem in place.

21. With cushion front right side up, place one hemmed back piece face down on top, aligning top and side raw edges with hemmed edge towards the centre. Pin in place. Place other piece face down on top aligning bottom and side edges with hemmed edge overlapping the other piece in the centre. Pin in place.

22. Sew together around all four sides using 1/4" seam allowance. Clip corners and overlock or zigzag seams to neaten. Turn cover right side out and press flat. Place insert into cover with back edges overlapping.
