Instructions:

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the project.

Note: Do not iron the fabric directly as it is coated to make it waterproof. To remove any creases, cover with an ironing cloth or a tea towel before pressing without steam.

-2cm seam allowance used throughout, unless otherwise indicated.

Cutting: Cut across one end to straighten.

Step 1- Measure 110cm down the length and cut across the width of the fabric. Fold fabric in half lengthways matching selvedges and finger press down the fold. Cut in half lengthways along the fold to create two pieces each 110cm long x 75cm wide.

Step 2- Take one piece, trim off selvedge and fold in half lengthways with right sides facing and finger press along the fold A-B 110cm (see diagram).

Step 3- Measure 32cm from the fold across the bottom edge B-C and mark. Measure from bottom edge up 36cm C-D and mark. Join A-D with a straight line.
Cut out on the lines.

Step 4- Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to make a second section.

Step 5- Repeat Steps 1 to 3 to make a two more sections for total of 4 sections.

Step 6- Place 2 sections together with right sides facing and use clips to hold together along one edge. Sew together along the edge and finger press seam open. Repeat for the other two sections.

Step 7- Place the sewn sections together with right sides facing and use clips to hold together along one unsewn edge. Sew together and finger press seam open. Repeat for the remaining unsewn sections. Smooth out top section and sew together across the top edge. Trim off the point. This completes the body of the bean bag. Do not turn right side out.

Step 8- For the base cut a 32cm wide strip across the width of the remaining fabric. Cut into 2 x 60cm wide strips making two 60cm x 32cm rectangles. Place 2 base pieces.

Place the two rectangles together with right sides facing and use clips to hold together along one 60cm edge. To sew rectangles together start at one end sew 2cm then backstitch, continue sewing stopping 2cm from end, backstitch then sew to the end.

Step 9- With wrong side facing centre the zipper face down along stitched seam and use clips to hold one side of the zipper to one side of seam. Attach the zipper foot to your machine and sew this side of the zipper in place. Use clips to hold the other side of the zipper to the other side of the seam and sew in place.

Step 10- Turn to the right side and use seam ripper to carefully open the seam between the backstitching to reveal zipper. Open zipper halfway.

Step 11- Using clips attach edges of base along bottom edges of bean bag with right sides facing.

Step 12- Sew base to bean bag pivoting at corners. Trim corners, open zipper fully and turn right side out. Fill with bean bag beans to desired fullness and close zipper.

Optional: If preferred, make a calico insert for the beans to the same dimensions as the bean bag but do not insert a zipper just hand sew opening closed.

Tip: To prevent the temptation of inquisitive little fingers opening the zipper sew a few stitches through the hole of the zipper pull securing it to the fabric in the seam.
