WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • 20cm Fabric A - Multi Spot Large, white
  • 20cm Fabric B - Multi Spot Large, grey
  • 20cm Fabric C - Multi Spot Small, white
  • 20cm Fabric D - Multi Spot Small, grey
  • 20cm Fabric E - Multi Stripe, white
  • 80cm Fabric F - Multi Stripe, grey (includes binding)
  • 20cm Fabric G - Multi Triangle, white
  • 20cm Fabric H - Multi Triangle, grey
  • 20cm Fabric I - Mono Triangle, royal
  • 20cm Fabric J - Mono Triangle, yellow
  • 20cm Fabric K - Mono Triangle, orange
  • 20cm Fabric L - Mono Triangle, pink
  • 20cm Fabric M - Multi Chevron, white
  • 20cm Fabric N - Multi Chevron, grey
  • 20cm Fabric O - Mono Spot Small, yellow

  • 2m x 250cm wide cotton/bamboo batting
  • Matching 'Gutermann' 100% cotton thread
  • Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
  • Quilting pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Hand needle
  • Sewing machine with 1/4" foot & walking foot

Note: All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed. 1/4" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated. Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.

Quilt measures: 72 1/2" x 90 1/2" (184cm x 230cm)

INSTRUCTIONS

CUTTING

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

  • From each of Fabrics A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q & R cut 2 x 3 1/2" strips (36 strips in total), keeping each pair together. Stack the grey backgrounds in pile 1, the white background and candy homespun in pile 2.
  • From Fabric F cut 9 x 2 1/2" strips for binding.
  • From Fabric S cut 17 x 3 1/2" strips for borders.


QUILT TOP

Step 1. To make strip sets from the 3 1/2" strips of Fabrics A-R, take two different strips from pile 1 and one strip from pile 2. Sew strips together with the strip from pile 2 in the centre, sewing seams in alternating directions to
help prevent bowing. Press seams in one direction. Repeat to make a second strip set the same using the same three fabrics. If desired refer to photo for colour combinations we used.

Step 2. Repeat step 1 making 2 strip sets for each colour combination, 12 strip sets in total.

Step 3. Crosscut each strip set into 4 x 9 1/2" squares and set aside remainder of each strip set for Border 2. Stack the 8 x 9 1/2" squares of the same colour combination together and label 1-6.

Step 4. Layout 9 1/2" squares as shown in diagrams.

Step 5. Sew the blocks in each row together. Press seams in one direction alternating the direction in each row.

Step 6. Sew the rows together matching seams. Press seams in one direction.

Step 7. Border 1 - Take 7 x 3 1/2" Fabric S strips, trim off selvedges and join together end to end to make one long strip. Cut into 2 x 72 1/2" strips and 2 x 60 1/2"strips, set aside reminder for border 2. Sew one 72 1/2" strip to each long side of the quilt. Press seams towards border. Sew one 60 1/2"
strip to the top and bottom of the quilt and press seams towards border.

Step 8. Border 2 - Take the strip set off-cuts and cross cut into 3 1/2" strips. Crosscut 1 x 3 1/2" Fabric S strip and the excess Fabric S strip from Border 1 into into 3 1/2" squares. For each side border start with a 3 1/2" Fabric S square and sew together 6 x 3 1/2" strip set off-cuts using a 3 1/2" Fabric S squares between each. Sew 1 x 3 1/2" coloured square to one end of the border strips. Press seams in one direction. Sew one strip to each side of the quilt. Press seams towards Border 1. Again starting with a 3 1/2" Fabric S square and sew together 5 x 3 1/2" strip set off-cuts using a 3 1/2" Fabric S squares between each. Sew 1 x 3 1/2" coloured square to one end of the border strips. Press seams in one direction. Sew one strip to top and bottom of the quilt. Press seams towards Border 1.

Step 9. Border 3 - Take 9 x 3 1/2" Fabric S strips, trim off selvedges and join together end to end to make one long strip. Cut into 2 x 84 1/2" strips and 2 x 72 1/2"strips. Sew one 84 1/2" strip to each long side of the quilt. Press seams towards border 3. Sew one 72 1/2" strip to the top and bottom of the quilt and press seams towards border 3.

Step 10. Cut backing fabric into 2 x 2.4m lengths. Trim off selvedges and using 1/2" seam allowance sew pieces together along selvedge edge. Press seam open.

Step 11. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 12. Join the 9 x 2 1/2" Fabric F binding strips together on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
