Christmas Kringle Gnomes Project

Level: Intermediate

What you'll need:

  • "Moda Vera" Kringle 8ply 50g x 1 ball 1st Colour (C1) White, 1 ball 2nd Colour (C2) Red, 1 ball 3rd Colour (C3) Green, 1 ball 4th Colour (C4) Christmas Mix.
  • A pair of 3.25mm knitting needles.
  • Hobby fill.
  • 2 Bamboo Skewers.
  • 2 Small Wooden Beads (to fit snugly on skewers).
  • Craft glue.
  • A large safety pin.
  • A small amount of contrast colour for plaits.
  • Scissors, yarn needle, tape measure

Tension

Correct tension is not essential for this decoration, however a firm fabric is desirable.

INSTRUCTIONS

LADY GNOME HEAD AND BODY

Beg Head -

Using 3.25mm needles and C1, cast on 3 sts.

1st row - K1, (K1, P1, K1) in next st, K1 ... 5 sts.

2nd row - Purl.

3rd row - (K1, inc in next st) twice, K1 ... 7 sts.

4th row - Purl.

5th row - (K1, inc in next st, K1) twice, K1 ... 9 sts.

6th row - Purl.

7th row - (K1, inc in next st, K2) twice, K1 ... 11 sts.

8th row - Purl.

9th row - K1, (inc in next st, K2) 3 times, inc in next st ... 15 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

13th row - K1 (inc in next st, K3) 3 times, inc in next st, K1 ... 19 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

17th row - K1, (inc in next st, K4) 3 times, inc in next st, K2 ... 23 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

21st row - K11, (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1) all in next st, turn, P5, turn, K5, turn, P5, turn, K5, turn, pass 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th sts over first st on right-hand needle (bobble), K11.

22nd row - Purl.

Beg Body -

Using C2, work 2 rows stocking st.

25th row - K1, (inc in next st, K5) 3 times, inc in next st, K3 ... 27 sts.

26th and every foll alt row - Purl.

27th row - K1, (inc in next st, K6) 3 times, inc in next st, K4 ... 31 sts.

29th row - K1 (inc in next st, K7) 3 times, inc in next st, K5 ... 35 sts.

31st row - K1, (inc in next st, K8) 3 times, inc in next st, K6 ... 39 sts.

33rd row - K1, (inc in next st, K9) 3 times, inc in next st, K7 ... 43 sts.

35th row - K1, (inc in next st, K10) 3 times, inc in next st, K8 ... 47 sts.

37th row - K1, (inc in next st, K11) 3 times, inc in next st, K9 ... 51 sts.

Cont in stocking st beg with a purl row until work measures 15cm from beg, ending with a purl row.

Beg Base -

Using C4, knit 2 rows garter st (ridge).

3rd row - K1, * K5, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 44 sts.

4th and every foll alt row - Purl.

5th row - K1, * K4, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 37 sts.

7th row - K1, * K3, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 30 sts.

9th row - K1, * K2, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 23 sts.

11th row - K1, * K1, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 16 sts.

13th row - K1, * K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 9 sts.

14th row - Purl.

Break off yarn leaving a long end. Thread yarn through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.

LADY GNOME ARMS

Using 3.25mm needles and C2, cast on 4 sts.

Beg i-cord-

1st row - Knit, slip these sts back onto left-hand needle.

2nd row, - drawing yarn firmly across back of work, knit (thus forming a tube).

Rep 2nd row until work measures 5cm from beg, slip sts back onto left-hand needle.

Using C1 (noting to join C1 on left side edge of work), rep 2nd row 3 times, slip sts back onto left-hand needle.

Break off yarn, thread yarn through rem sts from right to left, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.

LADY GNOME HAT

Using 3.25mm needles and C2, cast on 3 sts.

Work 4 rows stocking st.

5th row - K1, (K1, P1, K1) in next st, K1 ... 5 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

9th row - (K1, inc in next st) twice, K1 ... 7 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

13th row - (K1, inc in next st, K1) twice, K1 ... 9 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

17th row - (K1, inc in next st, K2) twice, K1 ... 11 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

21st row - K1, (inc in next st, K2) 3 times, inc in next st ... 15 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

25th row - K1, (inc in next st, K3) 3 times, inc in next st, K1 ... 19 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

29th row - K1, (inc in next st, K4) 3 times, inc in next st, K2 ... 23 sts.

Work 5 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

Using C4, knit 2 rows garter st.

Cast off purlways.

KNITTING

Using 3.25mm needles and C4, cast on 5 sts.

Knit 11 rows garter st.

Break off yarn.

Leave sts on a safety pin.

Tiny Knitting Needles -

Cut each skewer 10cm from the pointed end. Slip a wooden bead snugly over the blunt end of the skewer and secure with craft glue.

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS. Cut a disc of cardboard 1cm less in diameter than base to garter st ridge. Using mattress st and beg at base, join side edges tog to form base and back seam for half the total length, stuff firmly with hobby fill, moulding to shape. Close rem seam, stuffing with hobby fill as you go. Join side edges of hat tog to form centre back seam. Place hat on head and sew in position. ** Using yarn needle, thread 3 x 30cm length of contrast colour through each side of head slightly under edge of hat and using 2 strands for each section plait tog. Fasten off securely. Sew arms in position as pictured. Thread one tiny needle through end of one hand and through body as pictured. Thread rem tiny needle through second hand, the slip 5 sts left on safety pin onto tiny needle, thread end of needle through body as pictured.

MAN GNOME

Work as for Lady Gnome Head and Body, using C4 in place of C2 and C3 in place of C4.

MAN GNOME ARMS

Work as for Lady Gnome Arms, using C4 in place of C2.

MAN GNOME HAT

Work as for Lady Gnome Hat, using C3 in place of C2 and C2 in place of C4.

BEARD

Using 3.25mm needles and C1, cast on 3 sts.

Knit 1 row (WS).

Knit in garter st inc one st at each end of next row, then in every foll alt row until there are 11 sts.

Knit 5 rows garter st.

Cast off loosely.

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS. Work as for Finishing of Lady Gnome to **. Sew Beard in position. Sew Arms in position.
