KUNG FU CARDIGAN
Level: Intermediate
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
- 'Abbey Road' Kung Fu Cotton 100g: 5 (6-7) balls Main Colour (MC-oatmeal),1 ball 1st Contrast (C1-pink),1 (1-2) ball/s 2nd Contrast (C2-dusty pink) & 1 (1-2) ball/s 3rd Contrast (C3-beige).
- 1 pair each 5.50mm and 5mm knitting needles or sizes required to give correct tension.
- 2 safety pins.
- 5 buttons.
- Scissors, yarn needle, tape measure.
TENSION
16 sts and 21 rows to 10 cm over stocking st, using 5.50mm needles.
INSTRUCTIONS
BACK
Using 5mm needles and MC, cast on 79 (87-95) sts.
BEG RIB
1st row (RS) - K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.
2nd row - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows 5 times ... 12 rows rib in all.
Change to 5.50mm needles.
Work in stocking st until work measures 37cm from beg, ending with a purl row.
Shape Armholes -
Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows ... 73 (81-89) sts.
Next row - K2, sl 1, K1, psso, knit to last 4 sts, K2tog, K2.
Next row - Purl. Rep last 2 rows until 67 (75-83) sts rem, ending with a dec row.
Work 33 (35-37) rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
SHAPE SHOULDERS
Cast off 3 (4-4) sts at beg of next 8 rows, then 4 (3-5) sts at beg of foll 2 rows.
Cast off rem 35 (37-41) sts loosely.
LEFT FRONT
Using 5mm needles and MC, cast on 43 (47-51) sts.
BEG RIB
Work 11 rows rib as for lower band of Back.
Next row (WS) - Rib 5, leave these 5 sts on a safety pin for rem of front band, rib to end ... 38 (42-46) sts. Break off MC.
Change to 5.50mm needles.
Using C3, work in stocking st until work measures 32cm from beg, ending with a purl row. Break off C3.
Using C2 for rem, cont in stocking st until work measures 37cm from beg, ending with a purl row.
SHAPE ARMHOLE AND FRONT SLOPE
Cast off 3 sts at beg of next row ... 35 (39-43) sts.
Next row - Purl.
Next row - K2, sl 1, K1, psso, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
Dec one st (as before) at armhole edge in every foll alt row twice, AT SAME TIME dec one st (as before) at front edge in every foll alt row until 18 (21-22) sts rem, then in every foll 4th row until 16 (19-21) sts rem.
Work 3 rows without shaping.
SHAPE SHOULDER
Cast off 3 (4-4) sts at beg of next row, then in every foll alt row 4 times in all.
Work 1 row. Cast off rem 4 (3-5) sts.
RIGHT FRONT
Using 5mm needles and MC, cast on 43 (47-51) sts.
BEG RIB
Work 4 rows in rib as for lower band of Back.
5th row - K2, yfwd, K2tog, rib to end ... buttonhole.
Work a further 6 rows rib.
12th row (WS) - Rib to last 5 sts, turn, leave last 5 sts on a safety pin for rem of front band ... 38 (42-46) sts. Break off MC.
Change to 5.50mm needles.
Note - When changing colours in the middle of a row, twist the colour to be used (on WS) underneath and to the right of the colour just used. Use a separate ball of yarn for each section of colour.
1st row (RS) - K19 (21-23) C1, K19 (21-23) C2.
2nd row - P19 (21-23) C2, P19 (21-23) C1.
Rep last 2 rows until work until work measures 32cm from beg, ending with a purl row. Break off C1 and C2.
Next row - K9 (11-12) C2, K5 C3, K24 (26-29) MC.
Next row - P24 (26-29) MC, P5 C3, P9 (11-12) C2.
Rep last 2 rows until work measures 37cm from beg, ending with a purl row.
Work 1 row patt.
SHAPE ARMHOLE AND FRONT SLOPE
Keeping patt correct for rem, cast off 3 sts at beg of next row ... 35 (39-43) sts.
Next row - K1, sl 1, K1, psso, knit to last 4 sts, K2tog, K2.
Dec one st (as before) at armhole edge in every foll alt row twice, AT SAME TIME dec one st (as before) at front edge in every foll alt row until 18 (21-22) sts rem, then in every foll 4th row until 16 (19-21) sts rem.
Work 4 rows without shaping.
SHAPE SHOULDER
Cast off 3 (4-4) sts at beg of next row, then in every foll alt row 4 times in all.
Work 1 row. Cast off rem 4 (3-5) sts.
SLEEVES
Using 5mm needles and MC, cast on 35 (37-37) sts.
BEG RIB
Work in rib as for lower band of Back until work measures 8cm from beg, ending with a 2nd row.
Change to 5.50mm needles.
Work 4 rows stocking st.
Next row - K2, M1, knit to last 2 sts, M1, K2.
Cont inc one st (as before) at each end of every foll 12th (8th-6th) row until there are 43 (45-47) sts, then in every foll 14th (10th-8th) row until there are 47 (53-57) sts.
Cont without shaping until work measures 45cm from beg, ending with purl row.
SHAPE TOP
Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows ... 43 (49-53) sts.
Next row - K2, sl 1, K1, psso, knit to last 4 sts, K2tog, K2.
Cont dec one st (as before) at each end of every foll alt row until 21 (25-27) sts rem.
Work 1 row. Cast off 4 (5-5) sts at beg of next 4 rows. Cast off rem 5 (5-7) sts.
LEFT POCKET
Using 5mm needles and MC, cast on 23 sts.
Work in stocking st until work measures 12.5cm from beg, ending with a purl row.
Break off MC.
Using C1, work 6 rows rib as for lower band of Back. Cast off loosely in rib.
Using C1, make 10 tassels each approx 5cm long. Attach each tassel evenly along 1st row of rib as pictured.
RIGHT POCKET
Work as for Left Pocket, using C3 in place of MC and MC in place of C1.
Using MC, make 10 tassels as for Left Pocket.
LEFT FRONT & BACK BAND
Using mattress st, join shoulder seams. With RS facing, using 5mm needles and MC, rib across sts from Left Front safety pin.
Cont in rib until band fits (slightly stretched) evenly along left front edge to shoulder, then across half of back neck, ending with a 2nd row. Cast off in rib.
Place 5 markers for button placement, placing 1st marker 2cm from cast on edge (to match buttonhole on right front band), 5th marker 2cm below beg of front slope shaping and then rem markers evenly spaced.
RIGHT FRONT & BACK BAND
With WS facing, using 5mm needles and MC, rib across sts from Right Front safety pin.
Work to correspond with Left Front Band, working a buttonhole (as before) at same point as each button marker.
FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Using mattress st, join side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves.
Using a flat seam, join front bands together at centre back neck. Sew front bands in position, placing seam to centre back neck. Sew on pockets as pictured. Sew on buttons.
