INSTRUCTIONS

Note - 1cm seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the project.

Step 1 - Cutting from May Gibbs fabric cut a 34cm square, a 20cm x 6cm strip and a 12cm x 4cm strip. From lining fabric cut a 34cm square and two 16cm x 15cm rectangles.

Step 2 - From the fusible fleece use the template provided to cut out 2 pieces; and an 18cm x 4cm strip and two 14cm x 12cm rectangles.

Step 3 - Centre one piece of template fleece on the wrong side of fabric and lining squares and fuse in place. Cut out around the edge leaving a 1cm seam allowance around all edges. This creates the outer and lining of the bag

Step 4 - For the handle take the 20cm x 6cm fabric strip, centre the 18cm x 4cm fleece strip on the wrong side and fuse in place. Fold in each long side and press. Fold strip in half lengthways and topstitch down each side and down the centre.

Step 5 - For the tabs take the 12cm x 4cm fabric strip and press in half lengthways. Open out and press each long side into the centre. Refold in half and topstitch down each side.

Step 6 - To attach the handle place outer bag fabric side up, measure 3.5cm up from bottom edge and 2cm in from side edge and mark. Repeat on opposite edge. See diagram. Fold ends of strap to wrong side and pin to outer bag at marks. Topstitch ends of handle in place.

Step 7 - To attach zipper Fold outer bag in half lengthways and mark centre top and bottom. Fold zipper in half and mark each side. Open zipper fully and with fabric right side up place zipper right side down on one end aligning centre marks and pin. Pin edge of zipper to edge of fabric clipping into fabric of zipper to ease around the curve. Using zipper foot sew zipper to fabric only not through fleece. Repeat to attach other side of zipper to fabric at other end.

Step 8 - To attach lining Fold lining in half lengthways and mark centre top and bottom. Place lining sides together with bag matching centre top and bottom. Pin together at each end with zipper sandwiched between bag and lining. Sew together through fabrics only at each end. Turn right side out and press. Topstitch around ends.

Step 9 - To attach tabs cut tab strip into 2 x 5cm lengths. Fold bag in half with zipper ends together and mark centre point along each straight side. Open out. Fold a 5cm tab strip in half with raw edges aligned and pin to centre mark with fold facing in and raw edges aligned with edge of bag. Repeat for other tab on opposite side.

Step 10 - To sew bag and lining together start at one edge of zipper and using a 5mm seam allowance sew down, turn, sew along the straight edge to centre, securing tab in place, continue then turn and sew back up to other edge of zipper. Repeat for the other side.

Step 11 - To create box ends, close zipper and turn bag wrong side out. Push together so zipper forms a diagonal across the ends. Pin to hold then ease zipper open halfway along. At one end pin edges together to form a square and sew. Repeat for the other end. Cut off excess zipper that extends from seams.

Step 12 - For side inserts (make 2), take the two 16cm x 15cm rectangles of lining fabric and the two 14cm x 12cm rectangles of fusible fleece. Centre the fleece 2cm down from top edge, 1cm up from bottom edge and 1cm in from each side. Fuse in place.

Step 13 - With right side facing fold bottom edge up to 1cm below top edge, with side edges aligned and press. Sew together down each side. Clip corner from folded edge, turn right side out and press.

Step 14 - To attach, turn bag wrong side out with bag base facing up. Pin loose flap of insert to bottom bag with raw edges aligned. Sew in place.

Step 15 - Flip the inserts up towards top of the bag with base sitting down flat. Hand sew the sides of the inserts to the inside of bag.

Step 16 - Turn bag right side out and zip closed.
