WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Fabrics are from Wise Guys range:
  • 55cm Owls aqua/Owls brown (Fabric A)
  • 30cm Floral aqua/Trees brown (Fabric B)
  • 20cm Trees white/Owls white (Fabric C)
  • 30cm Floral yellow/Stripe (Fabric D)
  • Matching Guutermann 100% cotton thread
  • 2.5m white cord per bag
  • Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
  • Pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Iron, Sewing machine

Note: All strips are cut across the width of fabric.

INSTRUCTIONS

BAG FRONT

  • From Fabric A cut 1 x 10 1/2"strip crosscut into one 10 1/2"x 20" rectangle.
  • From Fabric B cut 1 x 3 1/2"strip crosscut into two 3 1/2"x 20" rectangles.
  • From Fabric C cut 1 x 2 1/2"strip crosscut into two 2 1/2"x 20" strips.
  • From Fabric D cut 1 x 4 1/2"strip crosscut into two 4 1/2"x 20" strips.

BAG BACK

  • From Fabric A cut 1 x 8 1/2"strip crosscut into two 8 1/2"x 20" rectangles.
  • From Fabric C cut 1 x 3 1/2"strip crosscut into two 3 1/2"x 20" strips.
  • From Fabric D cut 2 x 3 1/2"strips crosscut into three 3 1/2"x 20" strips.

CASING

  • From Fabric B cut 1 x 3" strip crosscut into two 3" x 19" strips.

HANGING LOOP

  • From Fabric B cut 1 x 3 3/4"strip crosscut into one 3 3/4"x 13" strip.

BAG FRONT

1. Arrange fabrics in following order from top to bottom as shown on diagram - B, C, D, A, D, C & B.
2. Sew strips together. Zigzag or overlock seams together and press seam allowances towards the bottom. Topstitch 1/8" from the seam line stitching through into the seam allowance.

BAG BACK

3. To make the hanging loop, fold 3 3/4"x 13" Fabric B strip in half lenthways and stitch down the long edge leaving ends open. Press seam open and turn right side out. Press with seam in centre back then fold in half with raw ends aligned and the seam on the inside and press.
4. Arrange fabrics in following order from top to bottom as shown on diagram - C, D, A, D, A, D & C.
5. Starting at the bottom sew the first 6 strips together. Find the centre of the sixth strip and mark with a pin. Place the loop in the centre aligning raw edges and with folded edge of loop hanging down the bag.
Pin to the seam line. Sew last strip in place catching the ends of loop in seam. Zigzag or overlock seams
together and press seam allowances towards the bottom. Topstitch 1/8" from the seam line stitching
through into the seam allowance.
6. With back and front of bag right sides facing pin and sew together down each side and across the bottom. Zigzag or overlock seams together. Clip corners and turn right side out. Fold top edge over 1/2" and press. Fold over another 1/2", press and topstitch hem in place.

CASING

7. Fold one 3" x 19" Fabric B strip in half lengthways and stitch down the long edge leaving a 1" opening in the centre (for turning through). Do not stitch ends. Press with seam in centre back. Stitch across ends, trim corners, turn right side out through opening and press. Pin casing across front of bag 3/4" down from the top edge. Pin along top and bottom edges of casing. Topstitch casing to bag along top and bottom edges close to the fold. Repeat for casing on back of back.
8. Cut cord into 2 x 1.25m lengths. Use a safety pin to thread one length of cord through one end of casing, around the bag and out the casing on the same side at the back. Remove safety pin, knot
ends together and trim. Repeat with other length of cord inserting it through the other end of the casing.
