How To Maintain Your Artificial Christmas Tree
Even though you only use your Christmas tree for about four weeks a year, maintaining it can increase its lifespan even more. Unfortunately, not many people maintain their artificial Christmas tree, even if they have invested quite a bit of money into it. So, if you want to keep your artificial tree in the best condition, be sure to check out our maintenance tips below.
Do I Need To Disassemble My Tree Before Cleaning It?
No. It is actually best to have your tree assembled when you clean it. When your tree is disassembled, the branches are usually pulled towards the base of the tree. So, when you try to remove dust, certain parts of dust will not be removed and get stuck between the branches. Therefore, set your tree up to give it a good clean.
Can I Use Cleaning Tools To Clean My Artificial Christmas Tree?
You can actually clean most artificial Christmas trees with your vacuum cleaner. However, you should never use your vacuum cleaner on the tree directly, as you need a special extension to prevent damage to the artificial branches.
The bristle brush attachment tends to be the most suitable for cleaning your Christmas tree. However, we always recommend testing the attachment on an inconspicuous part of your tree. Not all trees can withstand heavy suction. So, make sure your tree is strong enough to withstand this cleaning method before you start.
When your Christmas tree is a couple of years old, we do not recommend using the vacuum cleaner method. After all, one of the branches could get lose and get sucked up in the vacuum cleaner. Evidently, this can cause the vacuum cleaner to be damaged. It can also ruin your tree. So, you may have to go for the manual cleaning alternative in this case.
Can I Use A Cleaning Solution On The Artificial Christmas Tree?
If you cannot use the vacuum cleaner method, you can use the manual cleaning method instead. For this method, you should never use any harsh cleaning chemicals. Remember, harsh chemicals are more likely to cause discolouration or even damage your Christmas tree. So, it is best to use a combination of water and a mild detergent.
When making up your cleaning solution, fill up a bucket with lukewarm water and add a little bit of detergent. Please be careful not to add too much, as this may cause soap suds on the tree. Then, take a clean soft dish cloth or a dust rag and dip it in the solution. Then, wring out the cloth before you start cleaning. If you notice any soap suds on the tree while you clean it with the cloth, you need to wring it out a little better.
Once you have wiped down the base of the tree and all the branches, you will need to let the tree dry out before adding anything, especially the Christmas lights. There is no need to use a hair dryer or to put your Christmas tree near the radiator.
How Do I Clean The Artificial Tree After Christmas?
You can use the same cleaning methods as mentioned above. You can either manually clean the tree or use a vacuum cleaner. You can also use a handheld hoover for more control.
In addition to cleaning your tree, you should also prepare your tree for storage. Poor storage can cause damage to your tree. It is important to disassemble your tree and cover it with some sheeting to protect the tree against dust while it is in storage. In addition to that, you should avoid storing your tree in damp environments. Much like dust, damp can cause premature damage to your tree.
If you do not want to mess around with cardboard boxes and sheets, you can also get special Christmas tree covers that will protect your tree against environmental damage.
