Cushions can be transformational in living rooms and bedrooms, and there's no reason why they can't do the same for your outdoor areas. Outdoor cushions are just as comfortable as their indoor counterparts but they're made from more durable materials to weather harsh conditions.

Outdoor cushion covers are constructed from tough textiles such as vinyl, cotton canvas, duck cloth and sunbrella - a hardy material, specifically for outdoors, known for its resistance against moisture and colour fading. The filling of these cushions is primarily foam because its density provides good lumbar support while also meeting the durability requirements of outdoor furnishings.

Arranging cushions on your outdoor sofa

When arranging cushions on your outdoor furniture, follow similar design principles as your interior home decor but consider the green aspects of outdoors or other features of your garden. For instance, you might want to play up a tropical theme with brightly coloured designs that feature parrots. Remember to be practical because the more cushions you arrange on your outdoor sofa, the more you will need to put away at the end of the day.

Cleaning and caring for outdoor cushions

The good news is outdoor cushions only require very minimal maintenance. If you encounter some dirt and debris, simply brush the outdoor cushion cover to remove it. Stains can also be blotted out with an appropriate stain remover (check the manufacturer's instructions on the cushion label).

A word of warning - be careful with suntan and sunblock lotions! Lotions that contain oil can cause some nasty stains on your outdoor cushions and be difficult to remove. If you should notice an oily stain, remove it with some soapy water as soon as possible. To prevent the oil from marking the cushions permanently, you can add some corn starch to the soapy water. The starch will soak up the oil and prevent it from seeping into the fabric.

When the weather turns and you're not using your outdoor furniture, bring your cushions inside where you can give them a clean and store them away for next season.
