Spotlight’s Quick Guide to Fabric Painting

Do you want to get into fashion design and need some info on fabric painting? Or do you simply want to start making some of your own clothes and are discovering some useful new tools? Whichever it may be, our quick guide to fabric painting should provide you with all the information you need!

What Is the Best Fabric for Fabric Painting?

For most fabric painting projects, we recommend 100% cotton fabric. However, the type of fabric is not the only thing that matters for a good fabric dye, because a tight weave also provides better results. So, when it comes to dyeing certain fabrics, you must consider the thread count.

There are other fabrics you could that could provide excellent results; this includes silks. If you want to make sure your chosen fabric will dye properly, you could use a small sample and check the results beforehand; this does not only save you money, but also a lot of hassle.

Why Is the Tightness of Fabric Important for Fabric Painting?

When you choose a tighter fabric, it is much easier for the fabric to hold onto the intensity of the fabric paint. When the fabric is looser, the paint tends to seep through the fabric before it has the chance to dry; this is the reason why tighter fabrics are usually better.

Should I Pre-Wash Fabrics Before I Dye Them?

Pre-washing your fabrics before you dye them is usually the best idea, since some fabric manufacturers add a finish to their fabric; this finish usually goes when it is washed. You can also make sure that the fabric shrinks during the first wash, otherwise it might affect the fabric paint.

There is a simple way to test if your fabrics need a pre-wash or not. To check, simply drop a little bit of water on the fabric surface. If the water seems to leave beads on the fabric, then you will need to wash it first, since the paint might not soak in properly.

When you decide to pre-wash your fabric before you paint it, do not use any unnecessary chemicals, since they could cause problems with the fabric paint too. Therefore, avoid fabric softener and only use the essentials such as a basic washing powder.

Once you have washed and dried your fabric, make sure you iron out any wrinkles caused by the washing. If your fabric is wrinkled when you dye it, it can cause uneven colours and even unwanted patterns because of the wrinkles. So, make sure the wrinkles are gone before you apply any form of fabric paint.

How Do I Make Sure the Fabric Paint Is Set in the Fabric?

One of the most common questions we receive by people who dye fabric for the first time is how they should set the fabric paint. The answer is that there are several effective ways to make the fabric paint set.

The first way to set fabric paint is by using an iron. By using heat onto the fabric, the fabric will set properly. However, you must wait at least 24 hours before you start ironing the dyed fabric.

Of course, ironing can be quite intensive if you are working on a large fabric dyeing project. If this is the case with your project, you can save yourself some time by placing your project into the tumble dryer. Naturally, you could use this method with some of the smaller pieces too, but ironing tends to provide a better result.
