A yarn cake refers to when yarn has been wound into a round 'cake' shape with a flat top and bottom that keeps it steady. Yarn is pulled out from the centre of the cake and its flat shape keeps it from rolling about, like it would if the yarn were in a ball or skein.

How to keep a yarn cake from unravelling

If you are worried about your cake unravelling, use a bobby pin or a hair clip to secure the end of the yarn to the cake itself. You can also use a small piece of tape or a rubber band to secure the end, but keep in mind these may cause the end piece of yarn to fray slightly or fluff.
