What Type Of Felt Is Suitable For My Project?
While all felt might look the same upon first glance, there are actually different types of felt out there that can be used for crafting projects. Each of these types have specific applications, so it is worth looking into them to ensure you have the best option for the project you have in mind.
Acrylic felts are by far the most common, as they are the most affordable to produce. They come in a range of different colours, including some of the boldest colours you have ever seen!
While acrylic felt is the most affordable option, Spotlight recommends acrylic felt for children's crafting projects. The reason for that is simple. Acrylic crafting felt is less durable long-term compared to wool felt and other felt materials. So, for adult crafting projects, other blends and materials will be recommended.
An excellent option for adult crafts is wool felt. Pure wool felt is the best, but you can cut the cost somewhat by choosing blended wool felt, which is wool combined with another material such as rayon. Even though blended, they still provide an amazing result, but are more affordable than the pure wool options.
Even though you used to find the best colours with acrylic felt, you can certainly find a range of colours with wool felt too. So, even if you are looking for something vibrant for a crafting project, do not rule out wool felt completely.
How Do I Cut Felt?
When you cut felt, you need to pay extra attention to precision. Use an appropriate pair of scissors. Ideally, you want one that has short blades and a pointed tip, which tends to provide a much cleaner cut than other types of scissors. If you have such a pair of scissors, but they are blunt, make sure that you sharpen the scissors before you attempt cutting material.
Sometimes, you need to cut a template, and this can be difficult with scissors. Instead, there is the so-called "freezer method" you can use. For this, you use freezer paper that sticks to felt when it gets ironed. Then, you can mark the paper to easily cut out the shape you need with the appropriate cutting tool.
How Do I Look After Felt?
Felt is unlike any other fabric on the market, as this particular material is not woven. So, to take good care of your material, you need to store and take care of it in the right manner.
Firstly, always make sure you store felt flat. While you can work out folds in felt, it does take more effort than other fabrics. If you store this fabric flat, then it is less likely to get accidentally folded or wrinkled.
If you do encounter wrinkles or unwanted folds, you can iron your felt. However, only do this for wool felt, as acrylic felt could melt and ruined in an instant under clothes iron. For acrylic materials, you can always consider a fabric steamer instead.
Finally, it is important to know that not all felt can be washed in the washing machine. One of the types of felt where this applies is wool felt. If you do encounter a stain on the material, you can spot clean and dab the stain away. However, never rub the material, as this can damage it.
