Can I purchase wadding and batting at Spotlight?

Yes, you can. Wadding and batting are in essence the same type of product and are used to form the thickening layer of your quilted object, between the colourful top layer and the (usually) plain backing fabric. Here at Spotlight, we offer a wide range of wading and batting in various materials, sizes and thicknesses, as well as a host of other useful quilting products such as stabiliser (often used for giving body to embroidered designs, as well as interfacing, which can give more body to your quilting pieces if required.

What kind of wadding or batting will I need for my quilted object?

It is very easy to think that because it is not visible, you can use any quilt wadding or batting for your project. This really is not the case. All quilt waddings have a different drape to them and give the finished quilt a different feel. In addition, there are different thicknesses (also referred to as ‘loft’). You will want a different wadding for a table runner than for a winter quilt, for instance. Material also plays a part: if you are making pot holders or oven mitts, it is important to have a heat-resistant wadding if you want to be able to actually use the items.

What should I consider when choosing wadding or batting?

The choice you make is very often down to personal preference and price, but here are some things you may want to consider:

How much does it shrink? This is important for items that need to be washable after they are completed, and you may want to pre-wash your material and wadding before you start.

Can it be machine washed or can it only be hand washed? If your quilted item is a gift you need to be able to tell the recipient.

Colour: most are broadly off white, but if you are using white or thin fabric in your quilt you might need to look for a white quilt wadding.

Hand or machine quilting? Most waddings are fine for either, but there are some that are less suitable for hand quilting than others.

Extra features: wadding is available as fusible and as fire retardant. Do you need these properties?

How will the quilt be used? For a baby quilt or a bed quilt, you probably want one of the very soft waddings. For a throw or a wall hanging you can easily use one of the less expensive quilt waddings.

Allergies: Some people are allergic to natural or man-made fabrics. Although your wadding will be encased in fabric, this should still be considered.

What else is included in the range that I should know about?

This range at Spotlight also includes stabilisers. A stabiliser is an essential for machine embroidery. It is used to support the fabric during the stitching process to keep puckering or stretching from occurring. The choice of stabiliser can make all the difference to a successful embroidery project.

Stabilisers are divided by the method used to remove the excess from the back of the project after the design has been stitched. The three most common types are cut-away, tear-away and wash-away. Then in each category, you will find different weights, to use with different weights of fabric.
