Can I purchase batiste, lawns, voiles and cheesecloth at Spotlight?
Yes, you can. Although these cloths are all similar in that they are lightweight, fine, tightly-woven fabrics, they have some differences too. They lend themselves to a variety of uses from dressmaking to interior projects and can be used for crafting as well. Here are some definitions of the different types of cloth included in this range.
Batiste is a fine cloth made from cotton, wool, polyester, or a blend, and the softest of the lightweight opaque fabrics. In the past, it was often used as a lining fabric for high-quality garments. Batiste is also used for handkerchiefs (cotton batiste) and lingerie.
Lawn is a lightweight, sheer cloth, crisper than voile but not as crisp as organdie. Lawn is known for its semi-transparency, which can range from gauzy or sheer to an almost opaque effect. The finish used on lawn ranges from soft to semi-crisp to crisp, but the fabric is never completely stiff.
Voile is a soft, sheer fabric, usually made of 100% cotton or cotton blends including linen or polyester. The term comes from French and means veil. Because of its light weight, the fabric is mostly used in soft furnishing. In hot countries, voile is used as window treatments and mosquito nets.
Cheesecloth is a loose-woven gauze-like cotton cloth used primarily in cheese making and cooking, to strain soups, jellies and sauces. It is similar to muslin but not quite as strong, and with a slightly looser weave.
What types of fabric can I find in this range?
The batiste, lawn, voile and cheesecloth fabrics come in a range of prices, starting at a low price which makes it ideal for large swathes of fabric such as net curtains, theatre drapes or costumes, while at the top end, the fabrics are more suitable for delicate garments. They are available in natural colours and brightly dyed shades and you will find many with beautiful patterns too.
How do I care for these fabrics?
Because of their delicate structure and weave, it is recommended to wash these fabrics by hand where possible, and to let them dry naturally rather than using a dryer, unless you are using them in culinary situations (usually the cheaper cheesecloths). Take care when ironing, by putting a white cotton cloth between the fabric and the iron you can avoid scorch marks on the fabric.
