INSTRUCTIONS

Outer Bag

Step 1 - Cut two pieces from printed drill each measuring 52cm wide by 46cm high.

Step 2 - Place fabrics together with right sides facing. Pin left side edges together, sew with a 1.5cm seam allowance. Press seam open.

 

Pocket

Step 1 - Cut two pieces from printed drill each measuring 64cm wide by 28cm high.

Step 2 - Place fabrics together with right sides facing. Pin left side edges together, sew with a 1.5cm seam allowance. Press seam open.

Step 3 - Sew a double hem along the top of the pocket piece by pressing under 1cm then another 1.5cm, top stitch hem in place.

Step 4 - With right sides facing up, place pocket piece on top of outer bag, aligning base edges and matching center seam, pin center in place at base edge. Align the two outer edges of pocket with side and base corner of outer bag, pin in place.

Step 5 - Measure out 5cm to the left and to the right of the center seam. Sew a vertical line of stitching from these measurements up to the top of the pocket to secure in place.

Step 6 - Measure in 6.5cm from each of the outer side edges. Sew a vertical line of stitching from these measurements up to the top of the pocket to secure in.

Step 7 - Measure and mark with pins, the center of the pocket and the outer bag left between the sewn vertical rows of stitching. Align the pin on the outer bag with the pin on the pocket piece and pin together at base edge.

Step 8 - Step To make the base pocket pleats, measure out 2cm from these pins to each side, then fold back pocket to pins, then fold back. Press pleat in place and sew together along the base through all layers to secure pleat.

Step 9 - Repeat the same process to secure the other side of the pocket, pleating in the remainder of the excess pocket piece. Secure in place at base.

Step 10 - Measure up 6.5cm from the base long edge. Sew a horizontal line of stitching through all layers at this measurement.

Step 11 - With right side facing, fold outer bag with pockets in half, aligning the two outer side edges and the base edges. Pin then sew together along the base and the side edges with a 1.5cm allowance. Clip corners and press seams open.

Step 12 - Open and flatten out cut out corners, aligning seams. To create the mitered box base of bag measure 10cm across the open corners of base of bag, sew across through all layers. Trim corners and press seam open. Turn bag right way out and press all seams flat.

 

Straps

Step 1 - Cut two strips from printed drill each measuring 60cm long by 8cm wide. Press in 1cm along both of the long edges, then press in half aligning long pressed edges, pin together. Top stitch along both long edges to secure straps.

Step 2 - Measure and mark the middle of the top of one side of the outer bag. Measure out 6cm from this point to either side. Place the raw ends of one of the straps at these points aligning the raw edge of strap with the top raw edge of bag. The strap should have a 12cm gap between each end. Stitch in place 1cm in from edge.

Step 3 - Repeat for the other strap on the other side of outer bag.

 

Zipper

Step 1 - Cut 2 pieces from printed drill each measuring 37cm long by 13cm wide.

Step 2 - Press under 1cm along all edges of each piece of fabric. With wrong sides facing, press fabric in half aligning long pressed sides.

Step 3 - Insert each side of the zipper into the open pressed long edges of the fabric pieces. Ensuring each piece are even top and bottom, pin zipper in place. There will be excess zipper at one end hanging out of fabric. This allows to the bag to open wider when the zip is open

Step 4 - Top stitch zipper in place along all edges.

 

Lining

Step 1 - Cut two pieces of lining fabric each measuring 52cm long by 8 cm high.

Step 2 - Pin one each of these pieces with right sides facing to the each side of the zipper panel in the center.

Step 3 - Cut two pieces of lining fabric each measuring 52cm long by 35cm high.

Step 4 - Pin one each of these pieces with right sides facing to the other side of the zipper panel in the center aligning side edges. Sew with a 1.5cm seam allowance through all layers.

Step 5 - With right sides facing pin lining pieces together at the base and sides. With a 1.5cm allowance, sew the side edges and across the base leaving a 15cm opening in the center of the base seam for turning out. Clip corners and press seams open.

Step 6 - Open and flatten out cut out corners, aligning seams. To create the mitered box base of bag measure 10cm across the open corners of base of bag, sew across. Trim corners and press seam open.

Step 7 - With outer bag right way out, and lining the wrong way out, place the outer bag inside the lining. Align the top raw edges matching side seams. Ensure that the straps are facing down, in between the layers, pin top edges together. Sew with a 1.5cm seam allowance.

Step 8 - Turn bag right way out through the opening in the base of the lining. Press seam allowance of opening to inside. Top stitch opening closed. Place lining fully inside outer bag and press the top edge of bag flat. Top stitch around top edge of bag, 5mm down from the top edge and then another row of stitching 2cm down from the top edge.
