CUTTING

Note - All strips are cut across the width of the fabric (WOF) from selvage to selvage unless otherwise noted.

Fabric A - Trim panel to 35-1/2" x 43-1/2".

Fabric B cut - (1) 6-1/8" x WOF strip. Sub-cut four 6-1/8" squares.

Fabric C cut - (8) 6-1/8" squares cut with template (see instructions on page 6).

Fabric D cut - (1) 4-1/2" x WOF strip. Sub-cut four 4-1/2" squares.

(7) 2-1/2" x WOF strips for binding.

Fabric E cut - (2) 2-1/2" x WOF strips. Sub-cut thirty-two 2-1/2" squares. (6) 4-7/8" x WOF strips. Sub-cut forty-four 4-7/8" squares - cut once diagonally. (A)

Fabric F cut - (1) 2-1/2" x WOF strip. Sub-cut sixteen 2-1/2" squares.(1) 4-1/2" x WOF strip. Sub-cut sixteen 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles. (4) 3"x WOF strips for border 1.(10) 6-1/8" squares cut with template (see instructions on page 4).

SEWING

Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated. If no direction is specified, press seam toward darker fabric.

BLOCK ASSEMBLY

Step 1 - Fold a 6-1/8" Fabric F square in half with right sides together. Mark the center on opposite sides of the square. Fold two Fabric E triangles A with wrong sides together and crease to mark the center. Nesting centers, sew two Fabric E triangles A to opposite sides of the Fabric F square. Press the seams open. In the same manner, sew two more Fabric E triangles A to the other sides of the same square (figure 1). Press and trim ears. Repeat with another nine Fabric F squares and forty more Fabric E triangles A to make ten 8-1/2" blocks.

Figure 1 - Make 10.

Step 2 - Repeat step 1 with the eight 6-1/8" Fabric C squares and thirty-two Fabric E triangles A to make eight 8-1/2" blocks (figure 2).

Figure 2 - Make 8.

Step 3 - Repeat step 1 with the four Fabric B 6-1/8" squares and the remaining Fabric E triangles A to make four 8-1/2" blocks (figure 3).

Figure 3 - Make 4.

Step 4 - Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the thirty-two 2-1/2" Fabric E squares. With right sides together, layer a marked Fabric E square on the left short end of a 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" Fabric F rectangle and stitch on the drawn line. Trim 1/4" away from the seam line and press open. In the same manner, stitch another Fabric E square to the opposite end of the same rectangle. Repeat to make a total of sixteen flying-geese units (figure 4).

Figure 4 - Make 16.

Step 5 - Noticing fabric orientation, sew two step 4 flying-geese units to opposite sides of a 4-1/2" Fabric D square (figure 5, next page). Press seams to center. Repeat to make four block centers.

Figure 5 - Make 4.

Step 6- Sew one 2-1/2" Fabric F square to each short end of the remaining step 4 flying-geese units (figure 6). Repeat

to make eight strips.

Figure 6 - Make 8.

Step 7 - Noticing fabric orientation, sew one step 6 strip to the top and one to the bottom of each of the step 5 block centers (figure 7). Press seams to squares.

Figure 7 - Make 4.

QUILT TOP ASSEMBLY

Follow the quilt diagram and photograph while assembling the quilt top.

Step 8 - For border 1, sew together the four 3" Fabric F strips end to end using diagonal seams. Stitch a border strip to each side of the quilt center and trim the extra length. Press seams toward the border. In the same manner, stitch one border to the top and another to the bottom.

Step 9 - For border 2, and referring to the quilt photo and diagram for block placement, arrange two strips with six blocks each. Sew blocks together and sew one border strip to the right and one to the left side of the quilt center.

Press seams toward quilt center.

Step 10 - Repeat step 9 with the step 7 blocks and the remainder blocks, and sew one border strip to the top and one to the bottom of the quilt center.

LAYERING, QUILTING, AND FINISHING

Step 11 - Create a quilt sandwich with the batting between the quilt top and the backing. Pin or baste layers together, mark quilting design, and quilt by hand or machine. When quilting is complete, remove pins or basting, trim batting and backing even with the raw edges of the quilt top.

BINDING

Step 12 - Join the seven 2-1/2" Fabric D binding strips together end to end using a diagonal seam to make one long strip. Trim seams to 1/4" and press them open. Fold binding strip in half lengthwise and press. Sew binding to the edges of the quilt top, mitering corners, and overlapping ends. Fold binding to the back of the quilt and stitch it in place by hand to finish.

TEMPLATE (6-1/8" square)
