WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Fabrics are from 'Perennial' Organic Cotton range
  • 30cm Fabric A - Bouquet, Multi
  • 30cm Fabric B - Flora, White
  • 50cm Fabric C - Fauna, Black (includes border & binding)
  • 30cm Fabric D - Daffodil, White
  • 30cm Fabric E - Daisy, Pink
  • 20cm Fabric F - Heirloom, Blue
  • 20cm Fabric G - Monarch, Green
  • 3m Organic Quilters Cotton, Blanc
  • 2m Bouquet, multi or fabric of choice for Backing
  • 2m x 1.2m Cotton/bamboo batting
  • Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
  • Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
  • Quilting pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Hand needle
  • Sewing machine with ¼" foot & walking foot

All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed. ¼" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated. Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.

INSTRUCTIONS

CUTTING

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

  • From Fabric A cut 1 x 4½" strip, crosscut strip into 5 x 4½" squares, cut 1 x 2½" strip, crosscut strip into 12 x 2½" squares, cut 1 x 2⅞" strip, crosscut into 8 x 2⅞" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 16 half-square triangles.
  • From Fabric B cut 1 x 4½" strip, crosscut strip into 5 x 4½" squares, cut 1 x 2½" strip, crosscut strip into 12 x 2½" squares, cut 1 x 2⅞" strip, crosscut into 8 x 2⅞" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 16 half-square triangles.
  • From Fabric C cut 1 x 4½" strip, crosscut strip into 1 x 4½" square, cut 1 x 2½" strip, crosscut strip into 4 x 2½" squares, cut 1 x 2⅞" strip, crosscut into 8 x 2⅞" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 16 half-square triangles, cut 4 x 1½" strips for border, cut 4 x 2½" strips for binding.
  • From each of Fabrics D and E cut 1 x 4½" strip, crosscut each strip into 1 x 4½" square, cut 1 x 2½" strip, crosscut each into 4 x 2½" squares, cut 1 x 2⅞" strip, crosscut each into 8 x 2⅞" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 16 half-square triangles.
  • From each of Fabrics F and G cut 1 x 4½" strips, crosscut each into 4 x 4½" squares, cut 1 x 2½" strip, crosscut each strip into 8 x 2½" squares.
  • From Organic Quilters Cotton cut 1 x 4½" strip, crosscut strip into 4 x 4½" squares, cut 7 x 2½" strips, crosscut strips into 52 x 2½" squares and 20 rectangles 2½" x 4½", cut 4 x 2⅞" strips, crosscut into 40 x 2⅞" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 80 half-square triangles.

Note - each block is made using one Perennial Fabric and Organic Quilters Cotton.

Step 1 - To make Block 1: Fabric A - 1 x 4½" square, 4 x 2½" squares, 16 x half-square triangles, Organic cotton - 4 x 2½" squares, 4 rectangles 2½" x 4½", 16 x half-square triangles.

Step 2 - Layout the pieces as in the diagram and sew together the half-square triangles and replace in the layout.

Step 3 - Sew together the two half-square triangle units in top and bottom rows pressing seam open. Repeat for the two half-square triangle units on each side.

Step 4 - The block in now worked as a nine-patch. For the corner units sew one half-square triangle unit to a 2½" organic cotton square and another to a 2½" Fabric A then sew together as shown in diagram. For the centre units sew a 2½" x 4½" organic cotton rectangle to the half-square triangle units made in Step 3.

Step 5 - Sew together units in top row, sew centre units to each side of the 4½" Fabric A square, sew together units in bottom row. Press seams downwards.

Step 6 - Repeat Steps 1-5 to make 4 more of Block 1 replacing Fabric A with Fabrics B, C, D and E.

Step 7 - To make Block 2: Fabric A - 4 x 4½" squares, 8 x 2½" squares, Organic cotton - 1 x 4½" square, 8 x 2½" squares. Layout the pieces as in the diagram.

Step 8 - To make the corner 4-square units, sew together the 2½" Fabric A and organic cotton squares, press seams towards Fabric A. Sew units together matching seams, press seams in one direction. Repeat for all corner units.

Step 9 - The block in now worked as a nine-patch. For top and bottom rows sew a 4-square unit to each side of a 4½" Fabric A square. For the centre row sew a 4½" Fabric A square to each side of the 4½" organic cotton square. Sew the rows together matching seams. Press seams downwards.

Step 10 - Repeat Steps 7-9 to make 3 more of Block 2 replacing Fabric A with Fabrics B, F and G.

QUILT TOP

Step 11 - Layout Blocks 1 and 2 in 3 rows with 3 blocks in each row as in the diagram.

Step 12 - Sew blocks together in rows, matching seams and pressing seams in one direction alternating the direction in each row.

Step 13 - Sew a Fabric C border strip to each side of the quilt. Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric. Sew one Fabric C border strip to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric.

Step 14 - Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 15 - Join the 4 x 2½" binding strips on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
