  • 1m of one dark bird fabric to include binding.
  • Backing fabric - 132 x 112cm
  • Cotton wadding - 132 x 112cm

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 - Cut 13cm wide strips across the width of each fabric: cut 2 strips of each floral fabric, cut 3 strips of each bird fabric.

Step 2 - Sew bird strips together, alternating the fabrics, staggering the start by 5cm. Press strips open.

Step 3 - Sew floral strips together, alternating the fabrics, staggering the start by 5cm. Press strips open.

Step 4 - From each of these sewn fabrics, cut 25cm wide panels at a 60-degree angle - 3 x bird panels, 2 x floral panels.

Step 5 - Cut panels will position on the quilt as in the main photo, in a chevron pattern.

Step 6 - Lay backing on table, smooth wadding on top of backing and centre 1 x bird panel right side up on top of wadding.

Step 7 - Place 1 x floral panel face down on top of bird panel, align edges on the right-hand side and pin through all thicknesses. Make sure all points are aligned before and while you sew these panels together. Open panels and press seam.

Step 8 - Place the 2nd floral panel face down on top of bird panel, align edges on the left-hand side and pin through all thicknesses. Make sure all points are aligned before and while you sew these panels together. Open panels and press seam.

Step 9 - Place 2nd bird panel face down on top of right-hand floral panel, align edges on the right-hand side and pin through all thicknesses. Make sure all points are aligned before and while you sew these panels together. Open panels and press seam.

Step 10 - Place 3rd bird panel face down on top of left-hand floral panel, align edges on the left-hand side and pin through all thicknesses. Make sure all points are aligned before and while you sew these panels together. Open panels and press seam.

Step 11 - Using a dark 'Native Bouquet' bird fabric, cut binding strips 9cm wide and iron in half lengthwise. Pin these long, folded strips along both sides of the quilt. Sew through all thicknesses. Trim backing and wadding to edge of binding. Fold binding over to back of quilt so that folded edge sits past the stitching line. Pin. Either hand sew binding in place on the back of quilt or 'ditch stitch' from the front of the quilt making sure the binding is caught at the back.

Step 12 - Pin binding across the parallelograms at top and bottom edges of the quilt. Sew through all thicknesses. Trim excess fabric, backing and wadding to edge of binding. Fold binding over as per #11 instructions, ensuring the ends of the binding are folded over neatly at the corners. Finished!
