WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Yardages are based on 40" wide, unwashed fabric:

INSTRUCTIONS

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS

Please read all instructions carefully before beginning. 1/4" seam allowance is included in measurements and all strips are cut across the width of the fabric unless noted otherwise. Cutting for J. Pattern 26468-MUL1 (robots) is included in the Fusible Appliqué section.

A. Pattern #26470 - LTGRY1 (dots):

  • Cut one 371/2" strip. Subcut one 371/2" square.
  • Cut one 31/2" strip. Subcut nine 31/2" squares.

B. Pattern #26470 - BLU1 (dots):

  • Cut one 10" strip. Subcut two 10" squares and nine 31/2" squares.
  • Cut seven 21/4" strips for binding.

C. Pattern #26470 - RED1 (dots):

  • Cut one 10" strip. Subcut two 10" squares and ten 31/2" squares.

D. Pattern #26470 - YEL1 (dots):

  • Cut one 10" strip. Subcut two 10" squares and ten 31/2" squares.

E. Pattern #26470 - GRE1 (dots):

  • Cut one 10" strip. Subcut one 10" square and nine 31/2" squares.

F. Pattern #26470 - ORA1 (dots):

  • Cut one 31/2" strip. Subcut nine 31/2" squares.

G. Pattern #26471 - MUL1 (patchwork):

  • Fussy cut seven 31/2" strips so that two "bricks" are centered in each strip. Subcut fifty-six 31/2" squares with four "bricks" centered in each square.

H. Pattern #26470 - GRY1 (dots):

  • Cut one 61/2" strip. Subcut six 61/2" squares.
  • Cut five 11/2" strips for first border.

I. Pattern #26469 - MUL1 (gears):

  • Cut six 51/2" strips for second border.


PIECING INSTRUCTIONS

A. Fusible Applique:

1. Trace each applique shape the number of times indicated onto the paper side of the fusible web, leaving approximately 1/2" between shapes
2. Roughly cut out each shape 1/4" outside the drawn lines.
3. Fuse each piece onto the wrong side of the fabric following manufacturer's instructions.
4. Cut out each shape on the drawn line.

Large circle: Trace seven times. Fuse to Fabric J, centering a robot in each circle.
Small circle: Trace six times. Fuse to Fabric J, centering a robot head in each circle.
Small gear: Trace six times. Fuse to 61/2" Fabric H squares.
Large gear: Trace seven times. Fuse to 10" Fabrics B, C, D and E squares.

5. Using an appliqué pressing sheet on bottom, center each Large Gear on a Large Circle and fuse. Repeat with the Small Gears and Small Circles.
6. Keeping the pre-fused units at least 1" from the edges of the square, fuse each of the six small and seven large units to the 371/2" A square following manufacturer's instructions. Stitch the appliqués with a zigzag, blanket stitch, or other stitch of your choice to secure the raw edges (Figure 1).
7. Trim the quilt center to 361/2" square.

B. Patchwork blocks:

1. Lay out two 31/2" G squares and two 31/2" A-F squares as shown in Figure 2. Sew the top two squares together and the bottom two squares together. Press in opposite directions. Sew the two sections together to make 61/2" x 61/2" Four-Patch block. Press seam to one side. Repeat to make a total of twenty-eight blocks.
2. Sew six blocks together to make a side border. Press to one side. Repeat to make a second side border. Sew to the sides of the quilt center. Press toward the center (Figure 3).
3. Sew eight blocks together to make the top border. Press to one side. Repeat to make a bottom border. Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt center. Press toward the center.

C. Borders:

1. Sew the five 11/2" H strips end to end. Press to one side. Cut two side strips 481/2" and sew to the sides of the quilt center. Press toward H. Cut top and bottom strips 501/2" and sew to the top and bottom of the quilt center. Press toward H.
2. Sew the six 51/2" I strips end to end. Press to one side. Cut two side strips 501/2" and sew to the sides of the quilt center. Press toward I. Cut top and bottom strips 601/2" and sew to the top and bottom of the quilt center. Press toward I.

FINISHING

1. Prepare backing with a horizontal seam to measure 68" x 68". Press seam open.
2. Layer backing, batting and quilt top. Baste layers together.
3. Quilt as desired.
4. Trim backing and batting even with quilt top.
5. Sew 21/4" B binding strips together end to end with diagonal seams. Press seams open. Press strips in half lengthwise, wrong sides together for double-fold binding. Sew binding to quilt using your favorite method.
6. Make a label and sew to back of quilt.
