WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Fabrics are from 'Vanessa Holliday Bush Beauties' range
    • 60cm Fabric A - Riverbed, Blue
    • 60cm Fabric B - Snow Gums, Pink
    • 60cm Fabric C - Wattle, Blue
    • 60cm Fabric D - Summer Beauty, Blue Sky
    • 60cm Fabric E - Native Blossom, Ivory
    • 60cm Fabric F - Snow Gums, Mint
    • 1m Fabric G - Leaf Fall, Pink (includes binding)
  • 1.2m Prima Homespun, Natural Unseeded for sashing
  • 3.2m fabric of choice for Backing
  • 1.6m x 250cm Cotton/bamboo batting
  • Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
  • Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
  • Quilting pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Hand needle
  • Sewing machine with ¼" foot & walking foot

 

Notes:

All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed.

¼" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.

 

FINISHED SIZE

58" x 70" (147.5cm x 178cm)

INSTRUCTIONS

Cutting

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

  • From each Fabrics A, B, C, D, E, F & G cut 1 x 9½" strip, crosscut each strip into 3 x 9½" squares for a total of 21 x 9½" squares.
  • From each of Fabrics A, B, C, D, E, F & G cut 2 x 4½" strips, crosscut each strip into 9 x 4½" squares for a total of 126 x 4½" squares.
  • From Prima Homespun cut 28 x 1½" strips for sashing. Crosscut strips into 56 x 4½" lengths and 40 x 9½" lengths. Sew remaining 11 strips together end to end into one continuous strip pressing seams open.
  • From Fabric G cut 7 x 2½" strips for binding.

 

Blocks

Note - Placement of Fabrics A-G is random throughout.

Step 1 - Select one 4½" square and sew one 4½" sashing strip to the right-hand side. Press seam towards sashing. Select a different 4½" square and sew to the other side of the sashing and press seam towards sashing to create one two-square unit.

Step 2 - Repeat Step 1 to make a total of 56 two-square units. Note - there will be 14 x 4½" squares left over.

Step 3 - Select one two-square unit and sew a 9½" sashing strip to the bottom edge. Press seam towards sashing. Select a different two-square unit and sew to the bottom edge of the sashing and press seam towards sashing. This creates one four-square unit.

Step 4 - Repeat Step 3 to make a total 26 four-square units. Set aside the 4 remaining two-square units for the corners.

 

Quilt Top

Note - Rows are not even as quilt is on point and will be trimmed later.

Step 5 - Refer to the diagram to lay out the 26 four-square units with 20 of the 9½" squares (there will be one left over) and the 4 two-square units into 10 rows.

Step 6 - Sew the four-square units to the 9½" squares in each row using 9½" sashing strips. Press seams towards sashing.

Step 7 - To sew the rows together use the long sashing strip cut to size as follows but before cutting measure your rows and adjust length if necessary. All seams are pressed towards sashing.

  • Cut a 29½" sashing strip and sew to top edge of Row 2 then sew sashing to bottom edge of Row 1 (two-square unit) centered above the 9½" block.
  • Cut a 49½" sashing strip and sew to top edge of Row 3 then sew sashing to bottom edge of Row 2 with 4-square units above 9½" blocks.
  • Cut a 69½" sashing strip and sew to top edge of Row 4 then sew sashing to bottom edge of Row 3 with 4-square units above 9½" blocks.
  • Cut an 81" sashing strip and sew to top edge of Row 5 then sew sashing to bottom edge of Row 4 with 4-square units above 9½" blocks, the first 4-square unit extends over the edge and the 2-square unit will extend over the end.
  • Cut an 81" sashing strip and sew to the top edge of Row 6 with 4-square units above 9½" blocks, at the start the 2-square unit will extend over the edge.
  • Cut an 81" sashing strip and sew to the bottom edge of Row 6, at the start the 2-square unit will extend over the edge.
  • Cut a 69½" sashing strip and sew to bottom edge of Row 7 then sew top edge of Row 7 to sashing on bottom edge of Row 6 with 4-square units below 9½" blocks.
  • Cut a 49½" sashing strip and sew to bottom edge of Row 8 then sew top edge of Row 8 to sashing on bottom edge of Row 7 with 4-square units below 9½" blocks.
  • Cut a 29½" sashing strip and sew to bottom edge of Row 9 then sew top edge of Row 9 to sashing on bottom edge of Row 8 with 4-square units below 9½" blocks.
  • Sew top edge of Row 10 to sashing at bottom of Row 9 with 2-square unit centered below the 9½" block.

Step 8 - Refer to diagram to trim quilt top so that blocks are on point.

Step 9 - Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 10 - Join the 7 x 2½" binding strips on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
