  • Scissors
  • 2 x Canvases
  • Pencil and paper

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 - If you want pre plan your artwork by drawing on a spare piece of paper how you would like your canvases to look. Layer different shapes on top of each other to create larger shapes until you have a design you are happy with. Alternatively you can just make it up as you go along, it's completely up to you and how you like to work.

Step 2 - Start by painting large colour blocks of each paint colour onto the canvas paper. You will cut shapes out these later. Leave to dry.

Step 3 - Using the large paint brush, paint a few random strokes/shapes onto both canvases. Use which ever colours you like. This will create the back drop for your painting so have a think about the composition and keep that in mind while you do this step or refer back to your original sketch for inspiration. Leave to dry.

Step 4 - While the canvases are drying you can begin to cut shapes out of the painted canvas paper. Again, refer back to your original sketch or freely cut shapes out using the scissors. You can use a pencil to draw shapes onto the paper if you want to be precise but there really is no right or wrong when it comes to collage art. You can layer the same shapes on top of each other to create depth, tear the paper to create raw edged shapes or use a ruler if you want clean edges! The options are limitless.

Step 5 - Once you have a bunch of shapes cut out, now comes the fun part! Start placing your cut out shapes onto the canvas and layer to create a fun interesting design. It's a bit like a jigsaw puzzle - continue placing and moving things around until you are happy with the composition.

Step 6 - Once you are happy with your design, I recommend taking a photo of it so you can refer back to it when sticking everything down. Use PVA glue to stick down each piece individually, refer back to your picture if things move out of place.

Step 7 - To finish, use paint again and a smaller paint brush to paint in finer details. We painted some dots onto the flower like shapes we had created to give the piece some more depth. Allow all the paint and glue to dry before hanging!
