Frida Kahlo Cushion Project

LEVEL: EASY

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Fabrics are from 'Frida Kahlo' range
  • 30cm Fabric A - Frida Kahlo Floral Skulls, black/multi
  • 40cm Fabric B - Frida Kahlo Geo Floral, black/multi
  • 70cm Fabric C - Frida Kahlo Roses Allover, black/red
  • 70cm Fabric D - Frida Kahlo Floral Allover, black/yellow
  • 60cm Fabric E - Frida Kahlo Skull Wreaths, black/multi
  • 90cm x 90cm Legacy cotton/bamboo batting
  • Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
  • 3 x rolls Simplicity Pompom Trim, red
  • Size 30 (76cm x 76cm) Cushion Insert
  • Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
  • Quilting pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Hand needle
  • Sewing machine with 1/4" foot & walking foot

All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed. 1/4" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

INSTRUCTIONS

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the project.

CUTTING

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

Step 1 - From Fabric A, fussy cut two 9 1/2" squares with 4 skulls centered in each (refer to photo).

Step 2 - From Fabric B, fussy cut to 9 1/2" squares one with yellow centre and one with red centre (refer to photo).

Step 3 - From Fabric C cut one 32" x 20" rectangle for the cushion back - 3 x 2" strips, crosscut into four 2" x 12 1/2" strips and four 2" x 9 1/2" strips.

Step 4 - From Fabric D cut one 32" x 20" rectangle for the cushion back - 3 x 2" strips, crosscut into four 2" x 12 1/2" strips and four 2" x 9 1/2" strips.

Step 5 - From Fabric F, fussy cut 6 x 2 3/4" strips along the rows of skulls, crosscut one strip in half.

CUSHION FRONT

Step 1 - Sew a 2" x 9 1/2" Fabric C strip to each side of a 9 1/2" Fabric A square. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 2" x 12 1/2" Fabric C strip to the top and bottom edges. Press seams towards the strip to complete one Fabric A block. Repeat for the other 9 1/2" Fabric A square to make the second Fabric A block.

Step 2 - Sew a 2" x 9 1/2" Fabric D strip to each side of a 9 1/2" Fabric B square. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 2" x 12 1/2" Fabric D strip to the top and bottom edges. Press seams towards the strip to complete one Fabric B block. Repeat for the other 9 1/2" Fabric B square to make the second Fabric B block.

Step 3 - Layout the blocks in 2 rows as shown in photo. To join the blocks in Row 1, sew half a 2 3/4" Fabric E strip to the righthand side of Fabric A block. Press seam towards strip and trim off excess fabric. Sew the left-hand side of Fabric B block to the other side of the strip, pressing seam towards the strip.

Step 4 - To join the blocks in Row 2, sew half a 2 3/4" Fabric E strip to the right-hand side of Fabric B block. Press seam towards strip and trim off excess fabric. Sew the lefthand side of Fabric A block to the other side of the strip, pressing seam towards the strip.

Step 5 - To join the rows sew a 2 3/4" Fabric E strip to the bottom of Row 1. Press seam towards the strip and trim off excess fabric. Sew the top of Row 2 to the bottom edge of the strip, pressing seam towards the strip.

Step 6 - For the borders, sew a 2 3/4" Fabric E strip to each side, press seam towards strip and trim off excess fabric. Sew a 2 3/4" Fabric E strip to top and bottom edges, press seam towards strip and trim off excess fabric.

Step 7 - Centre cushion front on the square of batting and quilt as desired. Trim batting back to edge of the cushion front.

TRIM

Step 1 - With cushion front right side facing and starting in one corner, pin the pompom trim along the edge aligning straight edge of trim with edge of cushion cover. Continue pinning trim around the edge slightly overlapping trim to start a new roll.

Step 2 - Sew trim on place.

TO FINISH

Step 1 - To sew a double hem along one 32" long side of the Fabric C rectangle, fold and press under 1/4" then another 1/4" and topstitch hem in place. Repeat to sew double hem along one 32" long side of the Fabric D rectangle.

Step 2 - Measure the width of the cushion front and trim Fabric C and Fabric D rectangles to the same width.

Step 3- With cushion front right side up, place Fabric C hemmed back piece face down on top, aligning top and side raw edges with hemmed edge towards the centre. Pin in place. Flip over so wrong side of cushion front is face up and stitching from attaching the trim is visible. Sew back piece to cushion front along the same stitching line.

Step 4 - With cushion front right side up, place Fabric D hemmed back piece face down on top, aligning bottom and side raw edges with hemmed edge overlapping the other piece in the centre. Pin in place. Flip over so wrong side of cushion front is face up and stitching from attaching the trim is visible. Sew back piece to cushion front along the same stitching line.

Step 5 - Clip corners and overlock or zigzag seams to neaten. Turn cover right side out and press flat.

Step 6 - Press well and place insert into cover with back edges overlapping.
