WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Outer - Printed 112 cm Cotton Drill x 1.3m
  • Lining - Plain 112cm Cotton Drill x .8m
  • Legacy Fusible Fleece x 1.1m
  • Fusible medium interfacing x .2m
  • Dress zipper- 20cm
  • Piping cord
  • Birch Silver Eyelet Kit with tool - XL Silver
  • Gutermann Sewing thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Iron
  • Ruler/Tape measure
  • Washable marker

Seam allowance is 1.5cm unless stated otherwise.

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 - Outer Bag: Cut two pieces from printed drill and from fusible fleece each measuring 65cm wide by 55cm high. Fuse fleece to the wrong sides of the fabric.

Cut out an 8cm square from the base corners of each piece of fabric. Place fabrics together with right sides facing. Pin & sew side edges together. Press seams open. Trim fleece back to stitching line. Pin and sew the base edges together, press seam open. Trim fleece back to stitching line.

Open out cut base corners and pin raw edges together aligning the seams in the middle. Sew edges together to create the bag base corners. Press seams open. Trim fleece back to stitching line. Turn bag right way out.


Step 2 - Pocket: Cut a piece from printed drill each measuring 20cm wide by 50cm high. Overlock all raw edges. Press under 1.5cm along both shorter ends. With right sides facing up, pin one of the pressed under edges of fabric to one side of the zipper.

Top stitch fabric in place. Loop fabric around and pin the other pressed under edge of fabric to the other side of zipper, ensuring the fabric and zipper all line up. Top stitch in place.

Turn fabric with zipper to the wrong side and press pocket flat with the zipper 4cm down from the top pressed edge. Open zipper slightly for turning out and pin the two side edges together. Sew both sides. Clip corners and turn pocket right way out. Press pocket flat.


Step 3 - Lining: Cut two pieces from plain drill each measuring 65cm wide by 45cm high. Cut out an 8cm square from the base
corners of each piece of fabric. Place the pocket right side up on top of one of the pieces of lining in the middle aligning top raw edges. Sew pocket to lining fabric 1cm in from the top raw edges.

Cut two strips from printed drill fabric and fusible interfacing each measuring 10cm high by 65cm wide. Fuse interfacing to the
wrong sides of the strips of fabric. With right sides facing, pin and sew these strips to the top of each of the lining fabrics. Press seam upwards and top side both seams on printed drill 1cm up from seam line.

Place sewn lining fabrics together with right sides facing. Pin side edges together, aligning seams, sew together. Press seams
open. Pin and sew the base edges together leaving a 10cm gap in seam for turning out, press seam open. Open out cut base corners and pin raw edges together aligning the seams in the middle. Sew edges together to create the lining base corners.


Step 4 - Put together: With right sides facing, place the outer bag inside the lining. Pin top edges together aligning side seams. Sew together. Trim back fleece and interfacing to stitching line. Turn bag right way out through the opening in the base of the lining. Top stitch opening closed. Place lining inside the outer bag and press top edges flat. Top stitch around the upper edge of bag, 1cm down from top edge.


Step 5 - Eyelets & handles: To mark out placement for eyelets measure in 20cm from each side seam of bag and 4cm down from
top edge and mark with washable marker. Repeat on other side of bag. Install eyelets as per manufacturer's instructions.

To create cord handles, thread piping cord from the inside of bag through one eyelet and knot end tightly and brush out the cord to create fringing. Thread the other end through the other eyelet to desired handle length, knot to secure. Trim and neaten cord ends as desired. Repeat on the other side of bag to the same measurements.
