- 1 pair each 3.25mm and 4mm knitting needles or sizes required to give correct tension.
- 3 stitch-holders

- Scissors, yarn needle, tape measure

TENSION
28 sts x 36 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 3.25mm needles.
INSTRUCTIONS
BACK
Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 75 (77-83-87-93) sts.
Knit 5 rows garter st (1st row is WS).
Change to 4mm needles.
Work in stocking st (beg with a knit row) until work measures 23 (27-32-33-38) cm from beg, ending with a purl row.
Next row (RS) – K8 (9-2-0-11), K2tog, * K1 (1-2-2-1), K2tog, rep from * to last 8 (9-3-1-11) st/s, K8 (9-3-1-11) … 55 (57-63-65-69) sts.
Work 9 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
Shape Armholes – Cast off 2 (2-3-3-3) sts at beg of next 2 rows … 51 (53-57-59-63) sts.
Dec one st at each end of next row, then in every foll alt row 1 (1-1-1-2) time/s … 47 (49-53-55-57) sts.
Cont without shaping until armholes measure 6 (7-7-8-8) cm, ending with a purl row.
Divide For Back Opening – 1st row – K25 (26-28-29-30), turn.
Cont on these 25 (26-28-29-30) sts.
2nd row – K3, purl to end.
Keeping 3 garter sts correct, work a further 6 rows.
9th row – Knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, yfwd, K1 … buttonhole.
10th row – As 2nd row.
Keeping 3 garter sts correct, cont until armhole measures 12 (13-13-14-14) cm, working last row on WS.
Shape Shoulder – Cast off 4 (4-5-5-5) sts at beg of next row and foll alt row.
Work 1 row. Cast off 4 (4-4-4-5) sts at beg of next row. Work 1 row.
Leave rem 13 (14-14-15-15) sts on a stitch-holder for neckband.
With RS facing, join yarn to rem sts, cast on 3 sts for underlap, knit to end.
Cont on these 25 (26-28-29-30) sts.
Next row – Purl to last 3 sts, K3.
Next row – Knit.
Rep last 2 rows until armhole measures 12 (13-13-14-14) cm, working last row on WS.
Work 1 row.
Shape Shoulder – Cast off 4 (4-5-5-5) sts at beg of next row and foll alt row.
Work 1 row. Cast off 4 (4-4-4-5) sts at beg of next row.
Leave rem 13 (14-14-15-15) sts on a stitch-holder for neckband.
FRONT
Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 75 (77-83-87-93) sts.
Knit 5 rows garter st (1st row is WS).
Change to 4mm needles.
Work in stocking st (beg with a knit row) until work measures 23 (27-32-33-38) cm from beg, ending with a purl row and dec 1 (3-1-5-3) st/s evenly across last row … 74 (74-82-82-90) sts.
Work 1 row.
Beg patt – 1st row (WS) – K2, * P2, K2, rep from * to end.
2nd row – P2, * K2, P2, rep from * to end.
3rd row – As 1st row.
4th row – P2, * insert right hand needle from front between 6th and 7th sts on left hand needle and draw through a loop, slip this loop onto left hand needle and knit it together with first st on left hand needle, K1, P2, K2, P2, rep from * to end.
Rep rows 1 to 3 incl once.
8th row – P2, K2, P2, * draw through a loop between 6th and 7th sts on left hand needle (as before) and knit it together with first st on left hand needle, then K1, P2, K2, P2, rep from * to last 4 sts, K2, P2.
Rows 1 to 8 incl form patt.
Work 1 row patt.
Shape Armholes – Keeping patt correct and working any extra sts in rib, cast off 2 (2-3-3-3) sts at beg of next 2 rows … 70 (70-76-76-84) sts.
Dec one st at each end of next row, then in every foll alt row 1 (1-1-1-2) time/s … 66 (66-72-78) sts.
Cont in patt without shaping until armholes measure 6 (7-7-8-8) cm, working last row on WS.
Shape Neck – Next row (RS) – Patt 26 (26-28-28-30), turn.
*** Cont on these 26 (26-28-28-30) sts and dec one st at neck edge in every row until 17 (17-19-19-20) sts rem.
Cont without shaping until armhole measures 12 (13-13-14-14) cm, working last row on WS.
Shape Shoulder – Cast off 6 (6-6-6-7) sts at beg of next row and foll alt row.
Work 1 row. Cast off rem 5 (5-7-7-6) sts. ***
Slip next 14 (14-16-16-18) sts onto a stitch-holder and leave for neckband.
With RS facing, join yarn to rem sts and patt to end.
Rep from *** to ***, working 1 row more before shoulder shaping.
SLEEVES
Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 43 (47-49-51-55) sts.
Knit 5 rows garter st (1st row is WS).
Change to 4mm needles.
Work in stocking st (beg with a knit row) until work measures 3cm from beg, ending with a purl row.
Shape Top – Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows … 39 (43-45-47-51) sts.
Dec one st at each end of next row, then in every foll alt row until 19 (23-27-27-35) sts rem, then in every row until 9 sts rem.
Cast off loosely.
NECKBAND
Using mattress st, join shoulder seams, easing front shoulders to fit. With RS facing and using 3.25mm needles, knit across sts from left back stitch-holder, knit up 16 sts evenly along left side of neck, knit across sts from front stitch-holder, knit up 16 sts evenly along right side of neck, then knit across sts from right back stitch-holder … 72 (74-76-78-80) sts.
1st row (WS) – Knit.
2nd row – Knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, yfwd, K1 … 2 buttonholes in all.
Knit 2 rows garter st.
Cast off loosely knitways on WS.
FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Join side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Slip st 3 sts cast on for underlap in position. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
