Geneva Vanderzeil’s guide to making festive front door DIY Christmas decorations
Geneva Vanderzeil has teamed up with Spotlight to create an easy guide for decorating your front door with these simple yet fantastic DIY Christmas decoration ideas. One of the things I love most about Christmas is decorating the front door. And this year, I've partnered with Spotlight Stores to create a wow moment at our front door. I love the nostalgia of decorated doorways as it's something we always did as kids, so I'm really excited for my family to see my decorations this year.
Every year I decorate our front door in different ways, and I always head to Spotlight to stock up on their ready-made and DIY decorations. I absolutely fell in love with these cute little bottle brush Christmas trees and decided to use them as inspiration for decorating the doorways in our house. Being a lover of DIY, I decided to make a few different decorations that I'll share the steps with you below.
Christmas Raffia Garland
What you'll need:

- Cut three long pieces of raffia to the length required for your garland. Tie the three strands together in a knot at one end and use some masking tape to hold in place. Plat the raffia together to create one braided piece. Repeat this process for how many garlands you want to make.
- To add some bling to your garland, paint a thin layer of PVA glue onto the Papier Mache Stars and lightly dust the gold leaf over the top. Leave to dry for a few minutes before carefully brushing off the excess gold leaf. Repeat this process until all the stars are completely covered in gold leaf.
- To make the raffia tassels, cut a piece of cardboard to the length you want your finished tassel to be. Wrap the raffia around the centre of the cardboard until the desired thickness is reached for the tassel. Carefully slide the wrapped raffia off one side of cardboard onto your fingers. Using another piece of raffia, wrap around near the top of the looped yarn to create the head of the tassel. Secure tightly with a knot and trim along the bottom looped edges of the raffia to create the tassel. Thread a bell onto another long piece of raffia and tie this around the head of the tassel to finish! Don't cut the extra lengths of raffia from the bell as you will use this to attach the tassel to the garland. Repeat this process to make multiple tassels.
- Attach the tassels by tying the extra strands of raffia onto the braided garland, and thennd alternate adding stars with tassels until the garland is complete.
- For another simple but sweet garland, tie some gold bells to a strand of raffia and pair with the other garland.
Wire wreath
What you'll need:

- Bend the wire into a circle shape to determine the size of your wreath. Carefully cut the wire using wire cutters and begin threading the wooden beads onto the wire.
- Leave roughly 5cm of wire at both ends of the wreath with no beads. Use pliers to twist the ends of the wire together to secure and close the wreath loop.
- Tie some ribbon to the top of the wreath to cover where the wire joins. Add a gold leaf star to hang from the centre to finish!
Wooden Wreath
What you'll need:
Instructions:
- Make the paper palm leaves by folding some paper on itself and then cutting it into shape. Pinch one end of the paper and use some tape to secure it in place.
- Insert this in between the wooden parts of the wreath, use some hot glue to secure it in place if needed.
- Add some faux florals and more of the gold leaf stars and then secure everything in place with a hot glue gun.
- Thread some ribbon through the top of the wreath or attach it to the wall with hooks.
