Get inspired with fun craft ideas for Make it March

It's Make It March - our annual festival of all things crafty and arty and stitch-y. That means celebrating all kinds of makers, from skilled-up champions to enthusiastic newbies. We see you and your DIY crafts, and we love your work!

We're also celebrating all kinds of DIY projects: the crafts that keep your hands and brain busy, and the ones that help you chill out - the crafts that end up perfect, and the ones that fail in the best possible way. The crafts that connect to friends and family, and the ones where you channel self-expression, get covered in glitter, and end up making something that's uniquely you.

However you like to Make It, we have plenty of project inspirations to get those creative sparks flying. Just to get you started, here are some of our favourite craft ideas that makers of all skill levels can enjoy.

DIY tie dye fun

Tie dye has been delighting everyone from hippies to fashionistas to little kids for years now. It's bright, colourful, and a joy to make and wear. So, if you're looking for some craft therapy for yourself (or even a project to make with children and tweens), then tie dye is definitely for you.

Lean into the weirdness with this Tulip Tie Dye Kit project, which takes you step-by-step through making a colourful tote bag creation. The best part? There's no 'wrong' way to do it. Tie dye is meant to be wonky and wacky and unique. Own it!

Make a macrame plant hanger

Here's our bold claim: if you can tie a shoelace, you can confidently attempt a macrame project. It's literally making knots - in fun, artistic ways! Simple and practical, macrame also offers a retro, 1970s beach-shack vibe that's great for adding a touch of boho to your home decor.

This Macrame Plant Hanger project is extremely fabulous and doable for crafters of all levels, which is what Make It Month is all about. If you're a total macrame newbie, you might like to watch some YouTube tutorials to start, though it won't take much. This project uses only three knotting techniques, so you can get cracking pretty fast and create a gorgeous new home for your favourite plant.

Try some paint pouring

Think you're not an artist? We disagree! Everyone can make something beautiful with paint on canvas, especially if you take a few tips from our easy Paint Pouring project. All you need is a bit of creativity, some patience, and a willingness to get messy. Plus a lot of newspaper to keep you from accidentally painting the floor, yourself, or the cat.

This project introduces three fun techniques: the basic straight pour, the dirty pour and the tree ring pour. Have a go at one or all, match colours with your home interior, or make as stylish presents. (We think they'd work especially well for house-warming gifts!)

Stitch a cute raffia clutch

Get ready to repeatedly say, "Thanks, I made it myself!" once you complete this Raffia Clutch Bag project. Because you'll be getting compliments aplenty every time you whip it out in public.

Worked in raffia, this is not your average crochet project, but it's a fun challenge for anyone who's ever picked up a crochet hook - and our Make It Month is all about trying something new. If you're just starting out with crochet, check out our guide to the basics of crochet, then get stitching. You've got something fabulous to make!
