What should I look out for when buying an ironing board cover?
An ironing board cover with good padding is essential to getting good results. Most ironing boards include a cover at the time of purchase, but you may wish to upgrade, or change the cover if it has become stained or damaged. Here is what to look out for:
Size:As well as standard ironing boards, these are also extra wide, longer and smaller ironing boards for sale these days. So first of all, make sure that the ironing board cover you are planning to purchase will fit your ironing board. The size listed on the cover should match the measurements of the width and length of your board. The listed measurements should not include the wrap around area of the material.
Surface:Some covers feature non-stick or reflective surfaces. The non-stick qualities prevent clothes from sticking to the board - reflective surfaces transfer the heat back into the clothes which makes the job easier. The cover should be smooth and permeable to heat and steam. Teflon-coated cotton covers will not stick to your clothes and make it easy to clean away any build-up of starch or sizing.
Lining:Some ironing board covers are lined with foam, others with heavy-duty felt. Generally, the foam backing is less sturdy than the felt backing as the foam will deteriorate when exposed to the heat. If you would like some extra padding, you can also purchase a separate felt underlay to place between the board and your cover.
Fastening:Most ironing board covers Here you have one of two fastening systems: elastic straps (also referred to as bungees) or drawstring. Most covers are now being manufactured with the bungee fastening style, but you can still find the drawstring versions. These covers are fast and easy to fit to most ironing boards and will keep the cover taut, but sometimes ironing boards that have an attached iron rest plate at the end of the board may need a specialised cover.
