Spotlight's Fast Guide to Spray Painting

Do you want something different than the usual watercolours or oil paintings? If so, then spray painting might provide you with the fun and excitement you are looking for. Never done spray painting before? No problem, because here is Spotlight's fast guide to spray painting.

What Do I Need to Consider Before I Start Spray Painting?

Before you start your spray painting project, it is important to find a well-ventilated location to start your project in. As you may know, spray paint fumes can cause some problems such as dizziness and headaches, so working in an appropriate area can prevent that.

Another way to ensure the fumes do not get to you is by wearing a good facemask. You could choose a half-face mask, but also a respirator to limit fume exposure. If you intend on doing spray painting for a prolonged period, and want to do this indoors, then you simply must use a mask.

Before you start spray painting, it is also a good idea to get more familiar with your main tool: the spray paint can. To ensure you get an even spray, practice holding the can vertically. If not held in this position, the spray will be out of control. Therefore, make sure you get the hang of the vertical position before you move onto your project.

What Can Help Me to Create My First Spray Painting Project?

Spray painting is quite different from regular painting, since you are not working with brushes or similar art supplies. However, there are simple ways to create something wonderful. The best part? You don't necessarily have to buy anything special for it!

Beginners can easily use some disposable household objects to create their first spray painting project - for example, use some paper plates or other round objects to create some planets or the sun onto the surface. Once you have created the overall shape, you can fill in your object with a little more colour.

Naturally, there are more advanced ways to create a spray painting masterpiece, but you still do not need anything special. The only thing you must do? Save old pieces of cardboard, grab a crafting knife, and cut out the shapes you want to spray onto a surface. Then, you can create some overlays for filling and details. Quite simple, but it takes a little practice to get the hang of it.

When you are using your spray paint can, make sure you take the appropriate measures to stop the can from clogging. Hold your can upside down when you shake it - this makes sure that the paint particles end up in the liquid solvent a little faster. Also, make sure you shake for at least sixty seconds if the spray can has been laying around for a while.

How Can I Create Texture on My Spray Painting Project?

If you are ready to experiment even further, you can start to create some texture on your spray painting project. The same rule applies again for this step, because you only need some simple household objects to create texture.

One of the things you can use to add texture is some old newspaper or magazine paper. Simply rip a page up, crumble it a little, and add it to the surface when it is still wet with spray paint - this could create a fun texture for you to play with.

There are other materials you could use to add texture to spray painting projects though. Additional items you could use include patterned paper towels, plastic bags, burlap, sponges, and other things you like the texture of.
