Gel pen FAQs

What is a gel pen?

A gel pen is a writing tool filled with thick, creamy ink. Gel pen ink is more viscous than ballpoint pen ink, and gel pens are known for coming in bright, glossy colours and for having special effects like glitter.

How to refill a gel pen

Before trying to refill a gel pen, make sure it has been manufactured to be refillable! Otherwise, you will need to buy a new one. Buy an ink refill from the same brand as the pen, then remove the cap or unscrew the bottom of the pen barrel and take out the empty refill. If your new refill has some sort of cap, remove it, then insert it all the way into the pen in the same spot where the old one was. Place the cap back over the barrel of the pen and test it to see if it works. If it doesn't you may need to adjust the placement of the refill.

How to fix gel pen ink flow

If your gel pen has stopped working but still has plenty of ink left, try removing the ink cartridge and setting it tip-down into a glass of hot water (do not let any water get into the open end of the refill). Once the water cools, the ink should be flowing again! You should also check to see if there's a ball of dried ink obstructing the ink at the tip of the pen - pick this off or soak the tip in acetone to remove it.
