Celebrate the New Year in style with these New Years Eve party ideas

Staying in for NYE this year? Maybe you're thinking early fireworks for the kids and a few celebratory drinks before midnight. Or maybe you're looking to greet 2022 with a bang and a big New Year's Party for young and old.

No matter what your New Year's Eve Party looks like, all you need is a little inspiration (and some prep time) to make it special for family and friends.

Our New Year's Eve party ideas work for low-key celebrations and spectacular shindigs, too. Think of it like a three-step plan: first the practical stuff, then the glitter, then the fun!

Prep your home to party

Is your house ready to party? Or at least have a couple of chardonnays and stay up past midnight? Make sure you've got everything on hand to show your guests a good time.

If you're feeling fancy, why not greet guests with a signature tipple on arrival? Prepare in batches with a cocktail-making set and hand out to new arrivals - it'll make the night special, right from the start! You can also set up a party tub ready to fill with ice and drinks, and bring in some extra glassware if needed. (The last thing you want to do on New Year's Eve is the washing-up.)

For snacking that's just a bit fancy, get creative and arrange your nibbles on a charcuterie-style board so guests can graze all night. Or go big with a spectacular cake centrepiece, something for partygoers to admire through the evening, then enjoy at midnight with a cup of coffee (or just more prosecco).

Get some New Year's Eve glitz

Traditionally, New Year's Eve decorations are all about glitter and shine: metallics, sparklers and twinkling lights. Get glowing with fairy lights throughout the house and yard, or hang up metallic curtains for a luxe disco vibe. (They also make great backdrops for all your New Year's selfies!) For kids:

Younger kids will love a craft activity table to make something glittery for New Year's. This easy party hat project is a great inspiration - once done, they can proudly wear their new creations throughout the evening!

Party poppers and noisemakers bring instant fun, and why not make it a real celebration with a glitzy pinata full of sweets and treats? For a more chilled out evening, make it a NYE-themed movie marathon - anything goes, from High School Musical to Ghostbusters II.

For grown-ups:

Keep the good times going through the night with some low-key activities for grown-ups. Try a parlour game like charades (you can even use a charades app on your phone) or a social board game like Pictionary.

For New Year's Eve-themed fun, have a go at a Resolution Guessing Game. Ask guests to write their resolutions on a slip of paper, then read them out and guess who they belong to!

For everyone:

Set aside a designated 'dancefloor' (even if it's the middle of the living room) and pop on some party tunes to get everyone grooving. You could even ask guests ahead of time to nominate their favourite party songs and work them into a special playlist for the night.
