Discover the Various Types of Baskets in Existence!

Many people love their baskets! Not only are they used for laundry, some baskets are decorative or used for the presentation of a gift. So, it is no surprise that a good basket has become a stalwart in the Australian home.

Baskets have been around for a long time though, so they can be made with various weaves. If you would like to know more about the different types of baskets, and the characteristics that set them apart from one another, be sure to read our information below.

What Is a Coiled Basket?

A coiled basket is made with a process called coiling. During this method, the weave of the material starts at the centre of the baskets and then expands outwards in spiral rounds. Each consecutive round is attached to the previous, which means the coiled basket is made with a popular sewing technique.

Coil baskets can be made from different materials. You can find D.I.Y. coil baskets made from yarn, but also coil baskets made from tree leaves, willow, and much more. So, when you shop for coiled baskets, you will find many options that could match your interior.

The coiled basket can be used for various things; this includes storing fruit on your kitchen counter, fruit-picking, or even as a place to store your keys and coins. The choice is yours!

What Is a Plaited Basket?

Plaited baskets have a pattern that almost resembles a checkerboard. To create the pattern, weavers will weave two elements up and over at certain angles. Naturally, this provides a basket with quite a detailed pattern.

There are many different uses for plaited baskets, since these baskets can come in all shapes and sizes. You can find laundry hampers that were made with plaited weave, but also boxes, ottomans, and much more.

What Is the Wicker Basket?

Wicker is a term most Australians are familiar with, because this type of weave is used for more than just baskets. Wicker is commonly used for garden furniture, delivering a sturdy outdoor furniture option that can withstand the weather elements.

To create a wicker pattern, the weft material is pulled over and under a foundation; this could be several bundles of fibre. The unique method provides wicker with its outstanding strength, so weaves use this pattern for anything that requires extra durability.

What Is a Twining Basket?

One of the most elaborate woven baskets out there is undoubtedly the twining basket. To create this pattern, the weaver must use a foundation with sturdy elements and wave at least three weft elements. After this basic process, each of the wefts is separated and pulled around a warp rod. After that, the wefts are pulled together again and twisted.

Twining baskets can come plain, but there are some instances where the weaver might add a decorative element to the design of the basket; this is a process called false embroidery. During false embroidery, the weaver will add the decoration around the wefts on the outside of the weave.
