Eraser FAQs

What is an eraser?

An eraser is a small, soft piece of vinyl, plastic, rubber or gum that is used to remove pencil marks from paper or card. The pencil marks are lifted into the eraser and then removed in the dust and crumbs that it sheds, which are then carefully brushed off the paper to prevent smudges.

How to clean a rubber eraser

The easiest way to clean a drawing eraser is to rub the dirtied section on a sheet of clean scrap paper, as the pencil marks will transfer to the paper. You can also use light sandpaper to remove the dirty layer as well, but don't scrub too hard as it may cause the eraser to crumble or break.

What are rubber erasers made from?

Quality erasers are made from vinyl, plastic, natural rubber and materials similar to gum. Avoid cheaper erasers made from synthetic rubber and gum, as they may damage your paper and cause the pencil marks to smudge as they lift.
