Is fabric paint permanent?

Unlike acrylic paint, which sits on the surface of the fabric, fabric paint will soak into the fibres of your material for a permanent bond. There are a few ways you can help your fabric paint last as long as possible though! First, always wash the item of clothing so that if there is going to be any shrinkage, it happens before you paint the fabric. Then, you may like to iron your finished design with some protective wax paper to help 'set' the design - check your paint to see if it needs this. Finally, always hand-wash your painted fabrics in cool water with a gentle detergent to keep the design looking as good as possible.

Fabric paint FAQs

What is fabric paint?

Fabric paint is an artistic medium designed for use on fabrics like cotton and linen. Fabric paint is permanent when cared for correctly, and comes in many colours and special effects that ensure you can bring your vision to life. You can use fabric paint on clothes, fabric bags and fabric furniture covers.

How to paint on fabric

If you are painting on something with multiple layers (like a t-shirt), make sure to put a piece of cardboard between them so your paint doesn't leech through. Then, using a synthetic paintbrush, apply your fabric paint to your material. Once the paint has dried, follow any curing rules you may need to follow (like ironing the design) and give your material a quick handwash in cool water with mild detergent to finish.

How to remove fabric paint

If you have spilled a bit of detail paint like crystal paint or puffy fabric paint on your clothing, you can wait until it dries before peeling it off with your fingers. Otherwise, immediately dab at the offending paint with some paper towel to lift as much as you can from the fabric. Don't scrub it, as you will force the colour further into the fabric. Then run cold water over what is left of the stain with a bit of detergent. If this hasn't lifted all of the paint, run it through a cold wash in your machine to finish.
