What do I need to consider when choosing an iron?

The iron you choose will depend on the type of ironing that you usually do, and there are a few things to consider before making your purchase. The most important thing to consider when choosing your new iron is whether you would like a steam iron or dry iron. Steam iron means that you will easily be able to remove wrinkles from even the most stubborn of fabrics however, some materials require a dry iron only.

Many of our irons featuring automatic shutdown this means that if the iron is left on for any long period of time and get to higher than a certain temperature the iron will automatically shut down reducing the risk of fire. Check the temperatures and settings of your new iron, particularly if you press materials that require a specific setting often. It is also important to consider the cord on your new iron - it should not be too short or get in the way of your ironing.

Do you have any tips for ironing?

There is nothing quite like being faced with a pile of ironing, but follow our handy ironing tips and get your favourite songs on or that TV show you have been dying to catch up with, and your pile will be completed in no time at all. Begin, by checking the garment care label instructions to check whether your item can be ironed safely. Before you iron, make sure that your clothes are clean and dry. If you are ironing 100% cotton items, however, these can be ironed damp to make the job slightly easier. When you are ironing, make use of the entire ironing board.

Spread out your garment so that you can easily see what areas are yet to be ironed. Use long straight strokes and avoid moving the iron too much as this can cause the fabric to stretch and result in more creases. Avoid fasteners, such as zips and buttons, and any decorative elements including sequins, glitter, or studs. If you are ironing something with pleats, that you would like to maintain, then use a hairpin or Kirby grip to keep the fabric in place. Hang up or fold your clothes as soon as they have been ironed to preserve the wrinkle free finish that you have achieved.
